Nick Winser's recent landmark report outlines recommendations to accelerate UK grid infrastructure. This is a step in the right direction. However, the glaring omission is energy storage, the crunchy pickle that brings everything together. Battery storage will be crucial to integrate renewables and balance the grid. Without it, the UK would rely on gas plants, wasting clean energy. Storage absorbs excess electricity and discharges when needed, reducing infrastructure costs. It maximizes renewable utilization for climate and economic wins. Beyond batteries, long-duration storage like pumped hydro and hydrogen is critical too. ⚡Grid Expansion & Demand Response Essential for Future Energy Stability According to the latest DNV New Power Systems report, as global reliance on fossil fuels diminishes, the electricity demand is set to double by 2050. This increase calls for a significant expansion in global grid infrastructure and innovative demand response strategies to effectively manage the balance between grid supply and rapidly-increasing consumer demands. Key Highlights from the report: ➡ Grid Capacity Expansion: To meet the upcoming demand, the global grid capacity must grow 2.5 times its current size, with an annual investment expected to more than double to USD 970 billion by 2050. ➡Demand Response and Flexibility: The integration of renewable sources like wind and solar, which are set to generate about 70% of electricity by 2050, requires advanced demand response systems. These systems will provide the necessary flexibility to accommodate the variable nature of renewable energy. ➡Technological Innovations: Embracing AI and automated systems will be crucial in optimising grid operations and enhancing demand response capabilities. These technologies will support the grid in adapting to real-time changes in energy consumption and production. The path to a decarbonised energy system is clear.
