Last week, the Circularity team at Creavis had the pleasure of hosting a workshop with experts from Evonik on kneading and extrusion technologies for the circular economy. Within Evonik, we develop many types of products and processes that contribute to recycling and thus to the circular economy. Scaling up to commercial scale is a crucial step in any development project. Then it is time to choose the right machine that fits best. We believe that kneading and extrusion technologies are central to the circular economy as they facilitate the efficient recycling of plastics and other materials. These technologies enable continuous processing of materials, high throughput and a sustainable cost structure. During the workshop, we had the opportunity to share experiences and insights from different business lines and departments on various extrusion technologies. We explored innovative approaches to optimize both chemical and mechanical processes with their specific process windows. A big “thank you” to all participants and speakers for their contributions to this successful workshop. The shared insights and discussions will drive the development of innovative solutions and further advance the circular economy. 30 years ago I was given a sample of a new foaming additive for plastic, so I tried it with different moulds and materials and found I could expand the thicker areas without expanding the thinner areas. This work led to 3 patents and a technology known as CoralFoam Selective Expansion, I could expand discrete areas of a moulding by designing the wall sections thickness to expand or not. I spent 5 years developing product applications, a cup, a cream jar, cutlery and planters for the US, and an industrial bucket handle grip for the UK. The company then moved in Injection Compression Moulding (ICM) and the foam development stopped. 10 years ago I was approached and asked if I could come up with a new foaming technology, 2 years later the first patent was filed for a technology known as EcoCore from Bockatech www.bockatech.com This tech is all about fully foamed expansion with small bubbles, where CoralFoam was about selective expansion with bigger bubbles. I spent 8 years developing EcoCore, the patent portfolio and products, mainly lightweight, thermally insulated cups. During this period we adopted the MuCell technology from Trexel www.trexel.com This was to replace the chemical foaming agent, which are expensive and not as good for producing tiny bubbles. The smaller the bubbles, the better the thermal insulation. MuCell also helped reduce weight. EcoCore, combined with MuCell, is the best tech in the world for producing lightweight, thermally insulated containers. I no longer work with Bockatech, however, EcoCore is one of my best inventions, I hope it finds its place as it could dominate the thermally insulated cup markets world wide.  

In recent years, I've had the privilege of exploring various processing techniques in the realm of plastic manufacturing, but none have captivated and challenged me quite like the spunbond process. My focus has been particularly on the Reifenhauser Group Reicofil Technology. This journey led me to delve into my master's thesis, dedicated to the recycling and reutilization of spunbond filaments. Early on, I envisioned closed-loop systems to minimize waste during production pauses. With the support of EREMA Engineering Recycling Maschinen und Anlagen Ges.m.b.H. we successfully produced a high-quality rPP, conducting trials on a Reifenhäuser Reicofil pilot plant at Sächsisches Textilforschungsinstitut e.V. (STFI) It's gratifying to witness the growing significance of quality, recycling materials, and alternative polymers in this field, fostered through engaging discussions with existing and new clients. Why are biomanufactured dyes for textiles a game-changer? Fresh from the #sinbitech2023 conference in London, I witnessed presentations from some of the best and brightest UK companies, including an impactful one by Orr Yarkoni from Colorifix. At first glance, it's about using synthetic biology to transform the textile industry: engineering a 22-gene pathway to create strains that produce environmentally-friendly dyes, which slashes environmental footprints and dramatically accelerates the dyeing process. It's truly the poster child of what synbio can deliver! But there's more to it. For starters, their product is delightfully colorful! 👆 To me, the most striking aspect is their bold move towards decentralized biomanufacturing. By placing the dye-making process directly in the hands of the customer, they're not just changing production methods. They're reshaping how non-biotech workers perceive and interact with cutting-edge science. This means training a workforce, skilled in the textile industry, to manage a very complex biotech process. This education empowers individuals, transforming employees into informed citizens who understand the tangible benefits of sustainable practices. It's creating a ripple effect: as more people grasp the potential of synbio, we collectively move towards a more informed, responsible approach to industry, and the environment. Who would've thought a dye could recolor our view on technology and its societal impacts?
