As climate change, biodiversity loss and food insecurity become more pressing, agroecology stands out as a sustainable approach to agriculture. By integrating ecological principles into farming practices, agroecology enhances biodiversity, improves soil health and supports ecosystem services. This approach reduces reliance on chemical inputs and helps build resilient food systems that benefit both the environment and human communities.
Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are essential in promoting and implementing agroecological practices, facilitating community-based learning, encouraging knowledge sharing among farmers, and advocating for supportive policies at local and national levels.
The German development agency #GIZ, emphasises the importance of agroecology for sustainable development and published a policy paper clarifying the role of agroecology in their future programmes. GIZ works with NGOs to strengthen the capacity of local farming communities to adopt agroecological practices.
👩🌾 🥗 "A sustainability transformation of agricultural and #foodsystems is not only necessary due to the ecological and social costs and low crisis-resilience of the systems predominant today, but also economically unavoidable in the long term.
Policymakers have been signalling the direction of travel for some years; now we need an enabling framework, coherent policies and appropriate options for action.
#Agroecology is a win-win strategy and has great potential as a lever for restructuring agricultural and food systems."
🗞 In this newly released position paper Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH shares its recommendations and views on agroecology.
