Know Your Audience: In life, but particularly in sales, knowing your audience is crucial. This morning, in the midst of a long and arduous sales pitch from an HVAC installer, I hear a statement about "industry standard labor cost" being $5500 a day. To which I obviously 'flinch', since I too am in sales :) .. My response being, "that's closer to my total budget than just the labor component, you must have a lot of overhead to cover!" Here's where it gets interesting, had he known his audience, the following words would have been chosen differently, "Sure you can get some local mom and pop hot dog stand to put it in for that price...." I interrupt him, "What's wrong with hot dogs? I love hot dogs...... And locally made by people that I'd feel comfortable calling call mom and pop? Sign me up!" The look of confusion when I indicated a preference for small, local and reasonably priced items was priceless. Does the "We're a massive corporation, doesn't that make you feel like you can trust us?" approach ever work? How would you have phrased it differently if you were the salesperson - now that you 'know the audience'?

"Salesman" was a dirty word in the Midwest community where I was born. Literally, the word was said in hushed tones. It conjured images of a greedy man behind a desk who would ruthlessly manipulate you to get your every last dollar. Greed is real in sales, but it's also real in every other job. Being in sales a decade, there's only one requirement a salesperson needs in order to be successful. That is, they connect value to others. That's it. Find a message and connect it to people who can benefit from it. The rest, good or bad, is an individual choice.
