🌈 LGBTQIA Voices We would like to draw attention to the importance of equality, respect and inclusion in the workplace. Today, Paul Monteith, who is part of the global SMS family, shares their story of finding their own sense of belonging at SMS. “When I look back at the start of my career, I used to feel lucky that there was a 'passive acceptance' of me as a gay man. But that is not the same as inclusion, which is about actively including everyone – with all their differences and varying perspectives – and creating and practicing values that protect their rights as individuals and put all employees on an equal footing. On a day-to-day level, this would mean working in an environment where you feel strong within yourself about your sexual orientation or identity, where you know you do not have to avoid certain situations or topics of conversation at work. True, society is evolving fast and people may feel they are not up to speed on identity or gender issues, or they may have questions they want to ask, but all of this can be dealt with in a positive way if the right conditions are created in the workplace. We are all different in many ways but we are also one team, and being part of a well-functioning team automatically makes each member feel respected and included. This 'one family, one team' approach is something SMS does well and should continue to do."
