Small steps matter! Until next time Estanc
On May 16, 2024, Estanc's 6th Mission Day took place in the picturesque village of Laane, Harju County. Our mission: to contribute to the growth of Estonian forests by planting trees. 🌲🌳 This event was in cooperation with Vestman Group, a key player in the EU's "Trees for Life" project, having planted nearly 100,000 trees in Estonia.🌱 This year, 68 enthusiastic participants planted around 1712 spruce seedlings on a beautiful sunny day. Afterwards, we enjoyed a hearty lunch in the Viking Village's medieval setting. ☀️ Check out the video of our event👇 #missionday #Environment #Treesforlife

🗓️ 23 November | World Native Forest Day 🌳 This date seeks to promote awareness around the preservation and care of native tree species that develop naturally in specific regions of the world. In Latin America, the commemoration takes on special relevance, given the abundance of forests and the significant presence of indigenous communities and rural populations that largely depend on these resources or maintain a close connection with them. 🔗Learn more https://lnkd.in/enqhSByT

We believe in a green future where all parts of the ecosystem are equally important. So helping organizations like the Sengirės fondas - The Ancient Woods Foundation spread the word about the need to protect the old-growth forests is a meaningful pro-bono activity for us. That’s why we could not be more ecstatic over their most recent win — over 291 acres (118 ha) of mature woods have been preserved to date! In 2023 alone over 148 acres (60 ha) were bought so that future generations can live in Lithuania where ancient, biologically valuable forests and the animals, plants, and fungi inside them thrive untouched by human activity. We at American Bird Conservancy are proud to once again be a sponsor of the Nature Forward Naturally Latinos Conference. Both this conference and the Taking Nature Black Conference (which happens again next year) are spaces to engage with numerous inspiring ideas and people. My colleague Erica Sánchez Vázquez and I are hosting an informal lunch time listening session inspired by the influential 2023 article by Leticia Soares and colleagues (Neotropical ornithology: Reckoning with historical assumptions, removing systemic barriers, and reimagining the future). While the article focuses on ornithology and academic research, many of the barriers are also relevant to biodiversity conservation. These include unreliable and limited funding, exclusion from international leadership, and restricted dissemination of knowledge (language and access barriers). The article discusses problems related to discovery narratives and parachute science as well as limitations related to research questions proposed solutions. For example, when bird research is driven by questions based on examining long-dead specimens in museums, the questions we ask will be different from those we might ask after hearing the song of a living bird in a familiar nearby forest. We are interested in questions, ideas, and possibilities, including perspectives from people who have not read the article itself. As we co-envision an ethical future for conservation, we need the ideas and involvement of people within and outside of our field of bird and habitat conservation. This is one of a series of Future of Conservation discussions and events that we are planning for ABC's 30th anniversary. Hope you can join us on Thursday at 12:30pm Eastern Time! https://lnkd.in/eR2HVJqp

Great to see some sort of recognition of these areas around my home of the #dinglepenninsula. However, we need to develop stricter rules when it comes to the wildlife of the region. A quick glance on Instagram will show you the sheer amount of illegally caught footage of seals, basking sharks, cetaceans and sea birds. Pretty much the entire coast of the Peninsula is a SPA with other areas being SACs - this means you NEED a license from the National Parks and Wildlife Service, even if it's landscapes your after. Seán O'Callaghan, was helping a PhD candidate from GMIT (ATU Galway City / Science Placement Officer Science) on seals in the SAC and it was noted that drones affected their behaviour. That was just one drone (under license) so imagine what several cause? Even if your drone has a x7 zoom, it still causes disturbance Maybe the issue is lack of easily accessible information? Maybe we need to have signs displayed ALL around the region in all major languages that drone use is prohibited unless the appropriate licenses are held. This in turn could stop certain individuals hiding behind ignorance that they "didn't know". All the disturbance for what? To get the same shot as all the others. This also needs to put a microscope on the so called "ecotourism" companies operating in the area. The only company I know that abides completely by the laws is Eco Marine Tours (marinetours.ie) based from Ventry. I've seen others like Dingle Dolphin Boat Tours promote swimming with Baskers or just ignore messages about asking if patrons have the appropriate licenses - all for what seems to be promotion if their socials. That begs the question then if they actually care or just in it for the money? It also may control the disregard "influencers" may have on wildlife. I myself have been blocked on Instagram for making certain individuals aware that they're breaking the laws (Dublin_drone namely). I don't see any other option but to liase with DJI to require an access key only unlockable with a NPWS license number if operating in the area. Or at the very least, drone confiscation AND a significant monetary fine (and if IAA certified have that revoked).
