His insights offered a comprehensive view of how one of the world’s leading ports is pioneering in sustainability and clean shipping technologies. 👉The Maritime and Port Authority of #Singapore (MPA), the Port of #Rotterdam Authority (PoR), and 20 partners in the Green & Digital Shipping Corridor have joined forces to reduce international shipping emissions by 20%-30% by 2030🍀. This agreement was reached during the third Green Corridor workshop held in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The Green & Digital Shipping Corridor, established in August 2022, aims to achieve zero and near-zero emissions shipping on the Rotterdam-Singapore route, with the ultimate goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. The corridor has garnered strong support from global value-chain partners, including shipping companies, port authorities, fuel suppliers, banks, and universities. Efforts will focus on using zero and near-zero emission fuels in large container vessels, along with operational and digital efficiency. A study led by the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero-Carbon Shipping has explored various alternative fuels, including hydrogen. Combined Transport delivers value simultaneously to economic actors and society by bringing together various modes of transport to perform a single door-to-door transport operation. It is up to 70% more energy efficient with a carbon footprint that may be as much as 90% smaller than the dominant method of inland transport by end-to-end trucking. Door-to-door Combined Transport is capable of efficiently carrying any type of cargo that is transported in trucks, and it can provide a sustainable alternative solution to any origin/destination that is served by trucks today. Combined Transport should be integrated into the various national policy strategies of EU Member States, including those on • Energy efficiency • Climate change mitigation and decarbonisation • Reduction of energy dependence • Clean air initiatives • Road accident and congestion reduction Combined Transport offers the means to achieve the EU objective of doubling the market share of rail freight in Europe until 2050. The main source of rail freight performance growth is in modal shift, whereby freight trains need to get involved in the carriage of cargo that currently travels over long distances in trucks. The intermodal transhipment technique – based on the use of intermodal loading units to contain the cargo carried – offers the most efficient means to bring trucked cargo to freight trains. Today is World Maritime Day ⚓   The maritime industry plays an important role in the global economy as ships are carrying over 80% of global trade. Via our port, 350 million consumers in Europe are supplied on a daily basis with consumer goods and essential products, such as medicines and food. Businesses in and outside Europe are supplied with raw materials, semi-finished products and machinery. Without the maritime industry production facilities around the world would come to a halt. However, the port’s success today isn’t measured by the annual throughput of cargo, but by the impact we create for society.   That is why today, the Port of Rotterdam Authority and our partners are building a zero-emission port. Where vessels have access to sustainable fuels and clean shore power. Members of the Silk Alliance are progressing their maritime decarbonisation agenda with an implementation plan outlining the key objectives they intend to achieve before 2030. Bringing together maritime organisations ranging from shipowners, shipyards, engine manufacturers to financial institutions, the Alliance seeks to make a green shipping corridor across the Indian and Pacific Oceans a reality. To do so, it will focus on practical applications, including deploying vessels using near-zero-carbon ammonia and methane, scaling fuel supply infrastructure, and exploring avenues for bio and synthetic methane. It’s encouraging to see the increasing collaboration among such a broad range of maritime organisations to accelerate the decarbonisation of shipping, and supply chains more broadly. We are thankful for the opportunity to make the first official presentation of #Ports2Decarb at the Baltic Carbon Forum last week in Riga BASRECCS. Here are some of the main takeaways from the presentation by Jānis Volberts: ✅As logistical, industrial and infrastructure hubs, ports are a perfectly placed intermediary for the transport of captured CO2 to offshore permanent storage locations ✅Depending on the location of emitters, both on-shore and off-shore CO2 storage must be explored, but ports as hubs can be a vital transport element helping our economies get to net zero faster ✅Ports have all the means and the mandate to support regional decarbonisation efforts and restructure their portfolios, phasing out fossil-based value chains ✅The Porthos project can serve as an inspiration for port-based CO2 infrastructure, enabling decarbonisation of a larger industrial cluster, while Northern Lights JV will deploy a full-chain maritime connection between industrial emitters and offshore CO2 storage ✅Bellona Europa will work to connect industry with selected ports that make operational sense, identifying regulatory and funding opportunities to implement relevant infrastructure projects, supporting decarbonisation efforts from private and public sector.
