🎉 Celebrating National Intern Day with Activision and Demonware as a Front-End Intern! 🚀   I can't believe how fast time has flown by during this incredible internship journey. Today, on this special occasion,, I want to express my immense gratitude for the fantastic learning opportunities and the chance to be a part of such an amazing community. If you asked me 3 years ago if I thought I'd be living out my dreams working with gaming, I wouldn't have believed you.   Over the past few months, I've had the privilege to work alongside some of the brightest minds in the industry. The experience of contributing to cutting-edge projects and witnessing the impact of my work on real-world applications has been truly rewarding.   Moreover, I cannot emphasize enough how crucial it is to be part of a nurturing and supportive team. The guidance and mentorship provided by my colleagues have played a significant role in shaping my growth and development as I lean more into my skillsets and knowledge.   But not just from Activision, I've received the same support and encouragement from those within the EICOP, who have provided me with a community and a broader expanse of knowledge in the world of entertainment.   As much as I'm filled with joy and gratitude today, there's also a tinge of sadness in my heart. These last two weeks of my internship is approaching, and it's difficult to bid farewell to a place that has become a second home to me. I've earned my first credit as a designer in the industry, as an intern, and it's on the game I've been playing since I was nine years old. Yes, my brain is melting trying to comprehend it (though that may be because I just had a full day at work too). Working on WoW has been nothing short of amazing. I have my wonderful teammates and Blizzard Entertainment's Early Careers program to thank for it! I will of course be doing a big, mushy, sentimental post at the end of the summer, but...I wanted to take a moment and reflect. I got feedback that surprised me a couple weeks ago. When asked what I could do to be a better designer or team member, I was expecting to hear about my communication skills, my time management, or my tendency to over-scope (all things I struggled with HARD last summer). What I was not expecting, was to be told to believe in myself. That I HAD improved, that I was doing well, and that I should let myself believe that I was making progress. I needed to hear that feedback, badly. I was second guessing myself, giving myself anxiety over things I couldn't control. It was affecting my willingness to push forward, and my communication with others. Between the state of the games industry at large right now, and my doubts about my own performance, I was paranoid--terrified that if I didn't get things right, I'd somehow lose my only chance at a career. But the point of an internship is to learn! Trying to be perfect misses any goal of growth, and self-doubt can stifle that growth before it even begins. And so...it might just be my name in a menu, but it's my victory. It's proof that I put in the time, I put in the work, and that my efforts are paying off. It's proof I'm going to be okay. I need to let myself believe it. I am going to be okay.

I don't doubt the usefulness of internships (I am part of one myself, and know exactly what I'm getting out of it), but I'm not convinced that the majority of large companies are operating in good faith in how they utilize them. (Disclaimer: this is not anything against Riot or Hitmarker, I'm just using this post as an example, and if more people get connected with opportunities as a result of me posting this, all the better, use your discretion). It just seems to me that there is a common trend of AAA companies, caught up in shareholder-appeasing, offering more unpaid internships in the midst of massive layoffs. I don't doubt that there are other factors at play, but I'm not convinced that many of these companies aren't just cleaning house and getting fresh, inexperienced (and lets be honest, sometimes desperate) juniors that they can get the most unpaid mileage out of before the cycle repeats itself.
