Meet Marcus Vine and Zain Alqudah! SpaceBuds : An Exploration of Collaborative Game Design Methods This study aims to explore how game design can foster collaboration and evaluate the effectiveness of different design elements through a series of mini-games. The primary objective of this study is to create a practical application of research findings by demonstrating the design choices made and evaluating the created games.

On Friday I hosted U-TAAC’s second monthly discussion “Accessibility in Video Games”. 🎮💛 As most people know I have always loved playing video games. Though, due to the demands of being a university student, I rarely find time to play anymore. I was excited to find a way to implement my love of video games in an academic setting through this discussion. Hosting this discussion was extremely meaningful to me as it combined two of the things I’m most passionate about: video games and accessibility. I had the privilege to speak alongside Anisa Dahir who has a large involvement in esports within UofT and building community among students who play League of Legends . In this conversion, we discussed how different video games have made revolutionary advancements in terms of accessibility features, while also acknowledging what we can focus on in the future to continue to make games accessible. Additionally, we discussed ways to justify the implementation of accessibility features to game developers that prioritize financial gain and debated whether allowing all esports players to use accessibility features serves as an unfair advantage. We came to the conclusion that accessibility in video games is meant for everyone and consequently, should be an essential consideration in game development.

In her powerful TED Talk, 'Gaming for Understanding,' Brenda Romero demonstrates how games can be tools for profound learning and empathy. She shares her journey of designing games that tackle complex social issues and historical events, turning them into interactive experiences that foster a deeper understanding. One example is a game she created to help her daughter grasp the harsh realities of 'The Middle Passage.' By simulating the conditions and decisions faced by enslaved people, the game provided a visceral learning experience far beyond traditional teaching methods. With this and other games, she proves: - Empathy through Interaction: Games can immerse players in situations that build empathy and understanding. - Educational Potential: Well-designed games can make complex and sensitive topics more accessible. - Cultural Reflection: Games reflect and can influence societal knowledge of historical and contemporary issues. Romero's work highlights the transformative potential of games in education and social awareness. Her series of board games are, to me, more like artistic expressions that should be showcased in museums around the world. Important project about gamification and how it can play a role in creating strength and hope in young generations. To make them realize how they can be a part in building a sustainable world.

Protective factors help people and communities deal with adverse events. These factors are especially important for young people. For the past few years our annual game design challenge has focused on these to help teens. #Connectedness is our focus this year. For 2023 it was #CriticalThinking. In 2022 it was #Resilience. We've published several of the games about these topics. And we've also published free resources to supplement their use in classrooms. Many of our free games are available to play online or to download at https://jag.itch.io (jag.itch.io). We hope you will play and share these games.
