I hope Black alums around the U.S. realize the lack of power they have as universities cave in to the demands of politicians who don’t like DEI efforts. Use this opportunity to explore new models of investing that place control of your resources in your own foundations. What happens if you remove your money from the universities that are being constrained into funds YOU oversee and bestow directly to the recipients of your choosing? There may still be issues but the source of control SHIFTS. Think out of the box if you’re not pleased with a university’s efforts. Let your pocketbooks speak for you.

Yesterday marked the 159th anniversary of Juneteenth and the third year since becoming a national holiday. Here are some big takeaways on where we stand today: ▪ There is consensus that brands/businesses/corporations are doing “just okay” in supporting Black communities. ▪ We can do more than just a social media post. In fact, this was ranked the least helpful activity brands can do to support Juneteenth. ▪ Since Juneteenth was recognized as a national holiday, way more Black Americans have started participating in cultural celebrations for Juneteenth—more proof that representation and acknowledgment matters. If you're looking for ways you and your teams can support, these insights really show where your actions, empathy, and energy can make a big difference. Happy Freedom Day 🎉
The national recognition of Juneteenth marks a critical day in America’s history. It's meant to celebrate how far we’ve come, and reaffirm our collective need for continued action—in our communities, at work, and in the brands we create. So—where are we now? #juneteenth #research #celebrate

In celebration of Black History Month, IREM NYC decided to highlight some of our members. Meet Duane Penister MBA. Duane has been in the real estate industry for 20 years. For the past 12 years he’s operated independently as the broker/owner of DePenn Realty. Duane became involved in property management when he noticed that many of his clients were acquiring properties unintentionally–typically through marriage, divorce or inheritance. He wanted to provide options to maintain those properties and start to build wealth by growing his client’s real estate investment portfolios. Now celebrating four years in residential property management, DePenn Realty serves both new and seasoned property investors with a focus on single family and small multi-family (mostly 2-10 unit) properties in the Rockland and Westchester Counties. Currently a CPM® Candidate, Duane commented, "IREM provides me with a well-rounded education in property and asset management. So I've completed two of the required courses—“Marketing and Leasing Strategies for Investment Properties” and “Managing Maintenance Operations and Property Risk”. I was immediately able to incorporate knowledge obtained from the coursework into my company by improving our leasing plan. We are currently updating our maintenance program, and will finalize and introduce a risk management program to our clients." In regard to DEI and Black History Month he went on to say, "The impact and importance of DEI is invaluable. I have been shown potential strategies to employ upon recognizing unfortunate situations. Such strategies provide an approach to build and sustain cultures that support diversity, equity inclusion, and belonging. Black history month unveils the many untold stories of the contributions made by African Americans to this country, many of which would never otherwise be heard." #DEI #blackhistorymonth #propertymanagement #assetmanagement #certification #education

Happy Black History Month! As a Black-owned company, we know that every month is Black History Month, but we like to go all out in February. As we celebrate Black History Month, let’s dive into a crucial aspect of economic empowerment: Generational Wealth. Generational Wealth is not just about financial prosperity; it’s a testament to resilience, vision, and the enduring legacy of Black communities. During February, let’s leverage this month of reflection to understand, appreciate, and amplify the importance of building and preserving wealth across generations. What is Generational Wealth? From a textbook standpoint, it’s the accumulation of assets, resources, and financial stability passed down from generation to generation. For most of us, it is building and amassing assets to pass on to our children and family, and it can take the form of real estate, businesses, stocks, cash, etc. Let’s use this month not only to celebrate past achievements but also to actively engage in conversations that propel us toward a future of economic empowerment and financial well-being.

Hey everyone, 🌟 As we dive into Black History Month, I can't help but reflect on the incredible journey we're on at OfColor. I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude, inspiration, and sheer energy as a Black man working for a company dedicated to transforming the lives of employees of color. When I embarked on this mission, I was personally fearful of how this type of offering would be perceived. There were uncertainties about advocating for change and whether it would be the safest route for my career. Yet, here we are, standing tall amidst amazing clients, partners, and unprecedented growth. It's a testament to what can happen when you trust, believe, and step out on faith. As we celebrate Black History Month, it's not just about looking back at the achievements of those who paved the way; it's also about acknowledging the power within us to shape the future. Generational Wealth, a theme we're exploring this month, isn't just about finances; it's a legacy of resilience, vision, and the collective efforts of Black communities. I am personally invigorated by the real success stories we hear and witness every day – not just for ourselves but for the generations that will follow. It's a reminder that, as we push for economic empowerment, we're creating a narrative that extends beyond our individual journeys. Black History Month is a moment to celebrate the triumphs, big and small, that arise when we trust in our abilities and work together toward a common purpose. It's about fostering conversations that lead to a future where economic empowerment and financial well-being are accessible to all. So here's to the pioneers, the trailblazers, and every person who dared to dream against the odds. 🚀 May we continue to amplify our voices, uplift one another, and build a legacy that transcends generations. 🌍✨ #financialwellness #blackhistorymonth
