First-of-its-kind and in near real-time. Maritime analysts and conservationists have long aspired to locate unreported vessels from space using optical imagery (1st picture). Now, that aspiration is a reality through Skylight's new AI-powered Sentinel-2 detections (swipe right)! As one user said, "Skylight’s vessel detection data from Sentinel-2 imagery has been a game-changer. It's a significant time-saver to have vessel detections automatically flagged for investigation." And so analysts can confirm the AI model's work for themselves, we've made every detection linked to a corresponding raw image in Sentinel hub (last image). Imagine a future where your 'WheresMyCat' app alerts you with a satellite image of your cat on your neighbor's rooftop! With satellites like Maxar Intelligence’s new WorldView Legion, this could soon be a reality. On July 18, Maxar Intelligence unveiled the first stunning images from their WorldView Legion satellites. Launched just a few months ago, these advanced Earth observation satellites has the ability to capture 30 cm -class high-resolution imagery! These satellites will provide unprecedented detail for a myriad of applications - from defense and intelligence to urban planning and disaster response. All six satellites should become operational by the end of 2024. The ability to revisit the same location multiple times a day means we can monitor changes and respond to events in near real-time. In 2022, Maxar secured a $3.2 billion contract with the National Reconnaissance Office to supply imagery and mapping services over the next decade. The future of satellite technology is bright. The use of machine learning (#ML) and artificial intelligence (#AI) in the interpretation of satellite imagery will allow large volumes of data to be processed swiftly automating the identification and categorization of objects or surface changes. "Preparations for the launch of the new Earth observation satellite EarthCARE (Earth Cloud Aerosol and Radiation Explorer) at the end of May are in full swing... Three so-called processors, which the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS) has developed together with partners, are making an important contribution to the mission... The new software makes it possible to derive cloud properties from the passive spectrometer (MSI), aerosol and cloud layers from the active, high-spectral-resolution lidar (ATLID) as well as synergetic cloud and aerosol products from both instruments. An aerosol classification model (HETEAC) was developed as the basis for aerosol typing to ensure that these calculations work across the different devices." #satellitedata #earthobservation #atmosphere #aerosols #clouds

The use of SAR, as the understanding grows, combined with end user friendly tools to solve businesss problems will be fascinating to keep an eye on in the world of infrastructure and construction.
It has been a privilege to see the evolution of Maxime Lenormand's work with Minds Behind Maps. His latest deep dive on SAR is so well done, and a wonderful learning tool. It is great having these types of resources to make earth observation more accessible. I haven't seen the video nearly enough in my social feeds, so wanted to give it a boost - https://lnkd.in/g2jMm4qc #sar #earthobservation #satelliteimagery #satellites

Fascinating data available…Satlas combines the power of modern AI with the scale of public domain satellite imagery to provide monthly monitoring of the planet. “AI models in Satlas process freely available satellite images captured by the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-2 satellites. These images cover the majority of the planet every week, but are low in resolution, making them difficult to interpret even for humans. We leverage the latest advances in AI to robustly process images in this challenging domain and produce a variety of geospatial data products that we make freely available.” #spatialanalysis #spatialdata #artificialintelligence Link in the comments

Query of the week on Major-TOM: "airports" 🛫 🛬 . Let's search for some of Germany's airports in the vast MajorTOM dataset of European Space Agency - ESA. What we did: a) vectorising the entire Major-TOM image data for Germany; b) using our algorithms and models to make sure we also find the smallest parts of the satellite footage; c) no pre-training, no labelling happened in the preparation of this dataset. A Big Thank You to the European Space Agency - ESA for sharing their satellite dataset publicly, propelling our R&D. Contact us if you want to learn how #vectorisation and #dataexploration on unlabelled visual data helps you analyse, structure, and prepare satellite images and save time and money while doing it.
