Imagine a future where your 'WheresMyCat' app alerts you with a satellite image of your cat on your neighbor's rooftop! With satellites like Maxar Intelligence’s new WorldView Legion, this could soon be a reality. On July 18, Maxar Intelligence unveiled the first stunning images from their WorldView Legion satellites. Launched just a few months ago, these advanced Earth observation satellites has the ability to capture 30 cm -class high-resolution imagery! These satellites will provide unprecedented detail for a myriad of applications - from defense and intelligence to urban planning and disaster response. All six satellites should become operational by the end of 2024. The ability to revisit the same location multiple times a day means we can monitor changes and respond to events in near real-time. In 2022, Maxar secured a $3.2 billion contract with the National Reconnaissance Office to supply imagery and mapping services over the next decade. The future of satellite technology is bright. The use of machine learning (#ML) and artificial intelligence (#AI) in the interpretation of satellite imagery will allow large volumes of data to be processed swiftly automating the identification and categorization of objects or surface changes. "Preparations for the launch of the new Earth observation satellite EarthCARE (Earth Cloud Aerosol and Radiation Explorer) at the end of May are in full swing... Three so-called processors, which the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS) has developed together with partners, are making an important contribution to the mission... The new software makes it possible to derive cloud properties from the passive spectrometer (MSI), aerosol and cloud layers from the active, high-spectral-resolution lidar (ATLID) as well as synergetic cloud and aerosol products from both instruments. An aerosol classification model (HETEAC) was developed as the basis for aerosol typing to ensure that these calculations work across the different devices." #satellitedata #earthobservation #atmosphere #aerosols #clouds

These images cover the majority of the planet every week, but are low in resolution, making them difficult to interpret even for humans. Query of the week on Major-TOM: "airports" 🛫 🛬 . Let's search for some of Germany's airports in the vast MajorTOM dataset of European Space Agency - ESA. What we did: a) vectorising the entire Major-TOM image data for Germany; b) using our algorithms and models to make sure we also find the smallest parts of the satellite footage; c) no pre-training, no labelling happened in the preparation of this dataset.
