NATO Begins Largest Exercise Since Cold War ______________________________________ The exercise, called Steadfast Defender 24, is a major military drill involving about 90,000 troops from the 31 NATO members and Sweden. It will assess the alliance's readiness to rapidly deploy forces and will evaluate NATO's new defense strategies. The exercise will last until June. It is the main multi domain exercise for 2024 and will include a number of national and multinational large-scale, live drills in different geographical locations. Steadfast Defender is the biggest exercise since the last Reforger exercise in 1988, officials said. The drill is the first, extensive test of the alliance defense strategies that were endorsed at the Vilnius Summit in Lithuania last year. The exercise aims to show the alliance's solidarity and resolve to protect every part of NATO territory. The exercise will display NATO's capability to send, move and employ reinforcements from North America and other regions of the alliance to continental Europe. The drill will mainly occur in Finland, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Sweden and the United Kingdom, officials said. There will be over 50 naval assets, such as aircraft carriers, destroyers, frigates and corvettes. Air assets will consist of F-35s, FA-18s, Harriers, F-15s, helicopters and various unmanned aerial vehicles. There will also be more than 1,100 combat vehicles, such as over 150 tanks, 500 infantry fighting vehicles and 400 armored personnel carriers. Without reliable air defense, the F-16 fighters expected from the allies will be vulnerable. This opinion was expressed by Dmytro Zhmailo, co-founder and executive director of the Ukrainian Security and Cooperation Center, when commenting on the issue of protecting airfields and equipment located there, for Focus. "During the hostilities, the Ukrainian Armed Forces learned how to hide aircraft. Aviation often moves between airfields and can often be seen on highways. But as long as we are experiencing a shortage of air defense, we can't even talk about effective cover. We need American Patriot systems," the expert believes. According to him, Russian army reconnaissance drones hover in Ukrainian airspace for several hours due to the lack of air defense equipment. Therefore, in the absence of a sufficient number of air defense systems at the moment, the military leadership will have to solve the problem of protecting aircraft, including by non-standard means. #MAKING INDIA SAFER India’s indigenous Medium Range Surface to Air Missile Air Defence System has been deployed in Punjab’s Adampur. The Indian defence forces already have the S-400 air defence systems, which can hit targets at 400 Km maximum distance. WHAT IS MR-SAM? The MR-SAM, or Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile, is a missile system designed for air defense and is capable of shooting down enemy aircraft, helicopters, and drones at ranges of up to 70 kilometers (about 43 miles). The MR-SAM system is primarily intended to protect naval vessels, military installations, and other critical assets from aerial threats. The MR-SAM system features advanced radar and guidance systems to track and intercept targets. It is a two-stage missile, which means it has two propulsion stages that help it reach its target. The system is designed to counter a variety of airborne threats, including aircraft, anti-ship missiles, and UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles). Canada to participate in NATO's largest exercise in decades: Steadfast Defender 2024 The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) will participate in NATO's largest exercise in decades from the end of January to May 2024, deploying around 1,000 members to rehearse NATO’s Deterrence and Defence plans against Euro-Atlantic threats. This multi-month exercise simulates an Article 5 attack, divided into maritime defense of the North Atlantic and Arctic, and rapid deployment in Central and Eastern Europe. Assets include the HMCS Charlottetown with a CH-148 Cyclone helicopter, and a Canadian-led battle group in Latvia, featuring a Leopard 2 tank squadron. This operation marks a key step for the future Canadian-led Multinational Brigade in Latvia, enhancing CAF's integration within NATO's structure, reflecting Canada's commitment to NATO since Crimea's invasion in 2014. https://lnkd.in/gS_mfSru
