Let's talk about high school jobs! 💵 Here’s where two of my teens are working this summer. Making snow cones for all who need to cool off on a hot summer day. Hot tip: Pink lemon sour is my current fave flavor. 🍧 I love how high school jobs teach life lessons, even if the job is nothing like what you end up doing for a career later in life. My high school job was as a “counter girl” at the neighborhood dry cleaners. It doesn’t relate at all to the writing I do now. But I did learn a ton of important stuff through four years of working there: How to handle money, how to provide good customer service (the customer was always right at our store), working with others from all walks of life, the value of a good building fan (IYKYK!). I also learned how to make a complaint nicely vs how to be a complete ass and have an entire staff not want to wait on you ever again. Like I said, important stuff. I know my kids are learning many similar life lessons, including how to work with and report to a boss. (Theirs does a terrific job — shout out to Lyle Rupp at Snowie LLC Cincinnati!) I'll be so curious to hear years from now what lessons have stuck with them from their time shaving ice. What was your first high school job? What’s a lesson you learned from working there?

Career Clara-ty 🌕 for Mid-Career Academics Designing Meaningful Lives>Work| Alt-Academic Careers | Research/Impact | Funding Strategy | 🧠Psych PhD | 🌸Life After Academia™️ | Samba/Salsa💃🏽🇵🇷 | Capoeira🤸♀️
Some of you need to hear this: you can take the summer off to pause, reflect, and relax. You don't need to feel pressured to leave academia and find a job just because it's summer. In fact: Don't hire me over the summer. I know two people who wanted to hire me but won't since I encouraged them not to. They are taking the summer off. They felt they needed my permission to spend time with family and avoid work or job-hunting. You don't need my permission, but if it helps, you have it. Take the summer off and start your job search when you return. We don't talk recovery enough, but I took nine months off after leaving academia. I used that time to reset and explore what I wanted. During that period, I volunteered for a programme called Jump Up and Be Seen with other unemployed people - learning and choreographing a dance. Later, I took a low-paying job that was valuable to me and helped me transition into a different industry. I researched ways schools could decolonise their curriculum in science, technology, maths, and engineering. I created practical exercises for teachers. It was rewarding even though it was minimum wage. Others have worked in pubs, cafes or bookshops. It's your life; you need to be happy rather than living by others' expectations of what a PhD should do. That's the reality of it. Now, I'm going to go to Scandinavia to celebrate my 50th birthday! Is there anything better than spending the day with counselors? This week our team was in Denver with school counselor corps grantees talking ICAP, blurring counseling domains- social emotional, academic and career & exploring work based learning and other interventions Some of the things we heard: -How do we get to career advising when we have students not getting basic needs met? -How do our counselors connect better with CTE teams to get exposed to trends in the labor market? -How do we address barriers to accessing work based learning? -How do we know we’re reaching students that need in school career development the most? -How do we start career interventions earlier so that students see themselves in top jobs? And what are they already doing? -Bringing employers in as a partner in planning WBL -Connecting student interests with their academic and career goals -Bringing parents and families into the conversation
