My old pals in advertising, this fossil fuel fling has gone on long enough. 🛢️❌ The new F-List report reveals that ad giants WPP and Ogilvy lead with the most contracts for big oil. As an ex-WPP-er, this is personal. The time has come for adland to kick its fossil fuel habit. Last evening I attended a really interesting event to discuss the role the advertising and media industry can play a role in helping combat the climate crisis, hosted by MP Zali Steggall and James Greet of The Payback Project. It felt like a local town hall gathering with some pretty big hitters from the ad world in the room - Steve O'Connor (CEO JCDecaux), Natalie Dean-Weymark (COMPASS STUDIO), Leif Stromnes (MD Strategy & Innovation, DDB Group Australia) and John Pabon (Author & UN Advisor). My key takeaway: The role the ad industry can play is actually quite significant and bravery is required. Agencies and brands can't let the threat of greenwashing actually greenhush their efforts. If you're on the journey, your story is important and it needs to be told. We’ve learned the importance of simple sustainable swaps, innovative products, and entertaining—not preaching—to audiences. Our impact speaks volumes. Here We Flo, our 2021 Grand Prix winner, saw a 1000% increase in website traffic and a 158% boost in purchase consideration following their TV debut. Grub Club Pets expanded into the UK’s largest pet retailer, and OceanSaver’s first-ever TV ad won System1’s Ad Of The Week with a 4-star rating.
