Can Autonomous Driving ( self driving cars ) become real or is it a hype ? My answer now is: From a technology perspective - YES!. I think the jury is still out on the economics and business model. I had the opportunity to ride a waymo car for about half an hour in San Francisco – overall – very impressive ! The car behaves nicely , merges with traffic and handles urban scenarios/situation very well. Overall as a passenger – the ride feels safe. It looks like Waymo’s huge investment is safety, virtual testing, simulations and physical testing is the way to go. ( If you do now know what I am talking about – look for their safety and simulation blogs on the web). One area that still needs work is the pick up and drop off of passengers – finding a safe location. Currently, I would say that the vehicle behaves like a typical San Francisco Taxi driver will do.   I took some videos during the ride. The videos below are a concatenation of various clips, no editing or transitions, so somewhat hard to follow – sorry…. On is 4 minutes long, the other is 3 minutes – I pointed out the most interesting behaviors below.   Interesting behaviors: Part1:    see: https://lnkd.in/dE4tUMdt Start of the ride. 0:47 – The car is doing a right turn, but entering the left lane of the street ( out of two lanes ) 1:40 – starting a left turn ( there are two lanes to turn left ), when a car in the other lane is simply driving ahead instead of turning – the waymo car is breaking with full force. 2:30 – Climbing San Francisco hills … 2:44 – the car starts a left turn ( as was the planned route ) , but suddenly changes it route and avoids the turn.   Part2: See: https://lnkd.in/d9XN5K5C Start of video : The car tried to park behind a truck in order to drop the passenger, but suddenly decided to move in front of the parked truck. At about 1 minute – handling a tri-junction, turning right 1:30 – rain starts, the car turns on wipers – for the passengers 😊 1:57 – hard to see, but this is a drop off attempt simply in the middle of a crossing street. 2:28 – Green light , but the junction is blocked, the car is diverting and bypassing the blocking car. ( what you expect a human driver to do ) 3:02 – A pedestrian is crossing the road between two parked cars on the left – the car detects it and breaks. 3:46 – End of the ride, but due to some maneuvering van – the car decided to let us off simply in the middle of the lane.

Wrapping up a rewarding 2 days for team Kaluza at #BNEFSummit in London... My top panel was 'incentivizing flex' with Melissa Gander, Sotiris Georgiopoulos, Maud Texier & Lamé Verre FEI. Very cool to hear tech, suppliers and networks agree that the challenge for flex 💪 is no longer technology, rather how to scale ⛰ . Solutions need to be simple and frictionless for mass adoption... My personal highlight was Formula E 🚗 legend Lucas Di Grassi... If there was any doubt about the awesomeness of EVs: formula e cars use 15 times less energy per lap vs ICE F1 (Formula e cars can finish a race with the energy the ICE versions uses in 2 laps 😲 ) and Formula E cars charge at an eyewatering 600kW - whis would charge a regular road car 50% in 4-6 mins ⚡

Step into the Safer Future The European Road Safety Day took place on May 6. At Yameo, we decided to utilize this date to strengthen our knowledge about road safety not only as drivers but also as motorcyclists, cyclists, or pedestrians. We have decided that May will be Road Safety Month in Yameo. Until the end of the month, we will be sharing knowledge, and each person in the team will receive practical gadgets that can be used in difficult situations (although we hope they will never be needed). The first item has already been distributed to everyone. It's an emergency hammer - a tool that can save lives in the event of a car accident. By using the hammer, we have a chance to effectively break the window in a matter of seconds, which is crucial in life-threatening situations. In fact, tests show that the hammer can do this in less than 10 seconds! Additionally, the hammers are equipped with a blade that allows cutting through seat belts when they are jammed.   The culmination of the entire action will be practical activities in accordance with the expression Step into the Safer Future during our integration event.
