Let’s talk about #football. 31st July 2022 in fact.  That’s when the Lionesses won the Euros.  Or 28th August 2023. That’s when the Lionesses were defeated in the World Cup finals- ironically by Spain.  The Lionesses' journey, their triumphs (and losses), sparked important conversations about gender equality in sports.  A key talking point was around the football kit. Why did this matter?  Well, let’s start with football boots. Most football boots are designed for men yet:  Women's feet, heels and arches are shaped differently  Women move and run in a different way to men - and yet the length of studs on boots are designed around male movement and traction  And because women are wearing these boots, they have a higher risk of injury.  In fact, the European Clubs Association, which represents Europe's clubs, surveyed 350 female players from 16 top-tier teams (2023) and found that 82% felt discomfort which could affect their performance, while a fifth said they customised their boots in an attempt to improve comfort. Not a great position given the cost of football boots! And if the majority are experiencing discomfort what impact is this having on their health? So, it’s fan-tastic to see major brands (particularly Nike & PUMA Group) releasing boots specifically designed for women. This is a significant development!  There’s less risk of injury because these brands have worked with female footballers, to ensure the materials and textures used work with the way women kick and control the ball – better for health and wellbeing, and performance. This year’s #ParisOlympics marked a milestone in history: the first-ever Games with the same number of male and female athletes. But, parity DOESN’T mean equality. How can brands invest in women athletes to ensure real progress toward a gender-equal society?🟰🏅 DGC client Christine Guilfoyle, President of SEEHER, recently shared with Ad Age and Campaign US that there is an incredible opportunity for marketers when it comes to #WomenInSports, both during and outside of the Olympics, to broaden their audiences and set a standard for representation across the industry. According to Christine, “As [people] see and/or become comfortable with seeing [that physicality] in the cultural zeitgeist, then marketers will feel more comfortable incorporating that and pushing the envelope for that to be included.” In other words, brands must shape narratives and tell accurate stories that depict the true nature of their sports –  sweat, physicality, grit, and more – to create change. She also added the biggest driver towards an equal future: momentum. “The growth and excitement for women’s athletics will continue to expand. Companies that sit on the sidelines will miss significant business opportunities.
