UNLOCKING SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE THROUGH VOLUNTEERING AND PROBLEM-SOLVING Today, I want to share a personal journey that highlights the incredible power of volunteering and problem-solving in shaping our skills and experiences. A few years ago, I embarked on a journey to not only give back to my community but also to learn and grow in the process. Volunteering became my gateway to a world of opportunities I could have never imagined. As I rolled up my sleeves and dove into various projects, something amazing happened – I started gaining skills that were beyond my initial expertise. 1. Learning by Doing: Volunteering wasn't just about offering my time; it was about getting hands-on experience. Whether it was organizing events, managing teams, or collaborating on initiatives, each task exposed me to new challenges and taught me skills that textbooks couldn't. 2. Problem-Solving on the Go: Many of the projects I worked on required creative problem-solving. As I encountered hurdles, I realized that finding solutions wasn't just about having the answers, but about adapting, collaborating, and thinking critically. 3. Building a Network: Volunteering connected me with a diverse group of individuals who were experts in their fields. The connections I made became a treasure trove of advice, mentorship, and opportunities. 4. Boosting Confidence: As I successfully tackled challenges, my confidence soared. Knowing that I could contribute and make a difference motivated me to take on even more responsibilities. 5. Transferring Skills to My Career: The skills I gained through volunteering seamlessly transferred to my professional life. Whether it was communication, teamwork, or adaptability, these skills became invaluable assets in my career journey. So, if you're looking to broaden your horizons, consider volunteering and taking on problems as opportunities. It's a chance to challenge yourself, learn, and make a meaningful impact. In 2019, I embarked on my professional journey by securing my first job through volunteering. This experience catalyzed a period of rapid career growth and opened doors I had never imagined. Volunteering is more than just giving back; it’s a strategic move for career advancement. Here’s how: - Skill Development: Volunteering allows you to develop new skills or refine existing ones in real-world settings. For example, I honed my project management and leadership skills, which were instrumental in my career progression. - Networking Opportunities: Through volunteering, you meet professionals from various fields, expanding your network. These connections can lead to mentorship opportunities, job referrals, and collaborative projects. - Demonstrating Initiative: Volunteering showcases your proactive attitude and commitment to personal and professional growth. Employers value candidates who are willing to go the extra mile to develop their capabilities. - Exploring Career Paths: Volunteering can expose you to different industries and roles, helping you discover your interests and strengths. This exploration was pivotal in shaping my career path. Practical Tips for Leveraging Volunteering for Career Growth: - Identify Opportunities Aligned with Your Goals: Choose volunteering roles that align with your career aspirations. Look for opportunities that allow you to build relevant skills and expand your professional network. - Treat Volunteering Like a Job: Approach your volunteer work with the same professionalism and dedication as you would a paid position. Innovative and Creative Learning & Development Specialist Crafting and Implementing High-Impact Trainings for Organisational Growth and Improved Performance l Sunshine Yellow Color Energy
Volunteering for projects and events is not just about giving back; it's a powerful tool for personal and professional growth. Here's why: When you take advantage of collaborative opportunities, you immerse yourself in a sea of knowledge and skills from others. What might have taken years to learn can be shortened into the timeline of your volunteer work. This is especially true for those hungry for new experiences and insights. Whether it's crafting content, organizing events, or supporting logistics, each task opens doors to fresh ideas and better ways of doing things. Engaging with diverse viewpoints expands your horizons and pushes you beyond your comfort zone. The truth is, you never know your full potential until you step up and do something new. In November last year, I joined 'Caleb’s Hub (a cluster for professionals who work in consulting, have worked in consulting or generally interested in consulting) under the ‘’united tribe initiative’’ created by The Covenant Nation Iganmu. What started as membership opportunity for me quickly evolved into a leadership role. Being one of the coordinators has taught me helpful lessons in teamwork, program design, communication, managing engagement in public platforms and above all relating with people of different personalities and color energies. It's a journey that continues to sharpen my leadership skills, even in the face of challenges. Every day presents opportunities to learn and grow. By embracing volunteering opportunities, you not only gain knowledge for yourself but also share your expertise with others. Beyond the 9-5 grind, volunteering is a pathway to continuous learning and meaningful contribution to your community and profession. Have a lovely week. A Chapter One Success Story! Since completing her Dream Placement with Nexus Decommissioning Alliance Costain Group PLC Emily-rose Lane has stayed connected with the DDP as she continues to build her personal development, networking and future career skills. Last November she began her commitment as a Chapter One UK volunteer where she has virtually supported a pupil at a local primary school and in turn proved herself to be a true DDP young person ambassador. We touched base with Emily-Rose to find out about her Chapter One experiences and the impact she has created through a Question-and-Answer Session. These are the highlights- Q. What motivated you to become a Chapter One volunteer? A. When I was offered the opportunity to volunteer with Costain to get involved with the Chapter One programme I saw a chance to maintain my connections with the organisation and as networking is so important for my future career, I was more than intrigued. Once I found out what a great cause it was, I saw more than just a benefit for my career. I saw the chance to be a part of shaping a young person’s education; and helping them improve both their reading skills and confidence. Q. What have you found to be the most rewarding aspect of your volunteering? A. I read with a young girl who has come so far since we began our sessions. The most rewarding aspect is seeing how much she has improved over time. She is so passionate and joyful during our sessions. Q. Do you believe Chapter One will contribute to your future career development skills? A. Absolutely. Working with children in any aspect would contribute to my development in this way. Working with Chapter One, I believe that one of the future career development skills that I am working on in particular would be Communication – The programme involves constant interaction between the volunteer and the reader. Listening intently and then responding appropriately is what the whole programme stands on. Q. What would you say to a person who is thinking about becoming a Chapter One volunteer? A. I would tell them to stop thinking and just apply. If you have 30 minutes available in your week you could make a real difference in a young person's life. Just as I was told, I will say to you; ‘It will become the thing that you look forward to the most in your week’. Being a volunteer is so fulfilling and brings me great enjoyment. I would love that to be a reality for others as well. Emily-Rose's responses articulate the power Chapter One has to make a difference. We look forward to closely working with Emily-Rose over the course of this year and next. If you wish to become a Chapter One volunteer, please reach out to Andrea Noblett for more details. The Chapter One programme is funded by the DDP Nexus Decommissioning Alliance The Decommissioning Alliance (TDA) Integrated Decommissioning Solutions CUMBRIA NUCLEAR SOLUTIONS LIMITED ADAPT- Orano Altrad Babcock Atkins i3 Decommissioning Partners

Here are just a few of the experiences and skills you can gain from volunteering. NETWORKING & MEANINGFUL CONNECTIONS You meet with people at different stages in their careers or in different roles can lead to some valuable discussions. If you use this time to build a strong social network, you’ll gain networking skills. IMPROVING PEOPLE SKILLS Volunteering can reintroduce you to the feeling of being on the front line. 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐁𝐄𝐍𝐄𝐅𝐈𝐓𝐒 𝐎𝐅 𝐕𝐎𝐋𝐔𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐃𝐔𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐉𝐎𝐁 𝐒𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐂𝐇 “Seek volunteering opportunities”, was how my university lecturer advise me to begin. I can’t thank him enough for the advice. I remember some of my classmates complaining that how can they work without pay and my lecturer told us “allow yourself to be used”. He certainly knew the benefits of volunteering which is what I wish to outline in this post. Here are some benefits of volunteering that can improve your pathway to employment 𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐆𝐚𝐩 Your lack of work experience, a job layoff or taking a leave of absence from working are all causes for employment gaps. Volunteering during this time can help you close this gap and this will demonstrate to employers your reliability, ambition, and willingness to help others. 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 Volunteering can provide room to learn new skills like sales, project management, and managing a team. It is also an opportunity for you to sharpen soft skills in communication, demonstrating emotional intelligence, etc. 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 Volunteering is a great way to meet people in your community on a professional and personal level. Connecting with other volunteers and leaders can help you grow your network and may even lead to a job recommendation. 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 When you make the decision to jump into the job market for your next opportunity, do it with confidence. Adding your volunteering experience on your resume and discussing it in interviews can help lift your job seeker spirits and reduce any anxiety or stress you may be facing while searching for your next job. Including volunteering in your job search strategy will go a long way to turn out to your advantage. As a wise man often says ‘Service will serve’. If you are a still a student, a young graduate yet to get your footing in your desired field, or you were a victim of a recent layoff, consider volunteering in your community. All the best!! ------------------ We offer the following services to guide and facilitate your job search - Career coaching, - CV and Cover Letter writing, - LinkedIn profile creation and optimization, - Career SWOT analysis, etc. Contact us on WhatsApp at ( 237) 678302194 ------------------- Brandon Oben Career Coach and Recruitment Consultant PS: A picture taken during a volunteering experience in Dschang, West region of Cameroon organized by Rural Doctors in August 2019.
