'Volunteering: Nurturing your personal and professional growth' by Felicia Coniglio-Guyenot "Since the early days of my career, volunteer opportunities have provided practical and invaluable skills, helping me grow in my career journey. Now, 13 years into my communications and media career and on the heels of restructuring and re-alignment at my previous role, volunteering remains a source of inspiration as I embark on a new career transition and find my next communications opportunity. Becoming an IABC/Toronto member and engaging in the meaningful volunteer opportunities and resources it offers has filled what can sometimes be a scary time of uncertainty and self-doubt with positivity, direction and focus. Volunteering has reinforced my passion and love for communications and kept my mindset positive and skills sharp in an evolving and ever-changing industry. The benefits of an IABC/Toronto membership are that it strengthens personal and professional development at any stage of your career. Here are some advantages I’ve realized through my experience: 1. Community, purpose and a sense of fulfilment- Exploring aspects of the communications industry outside of a work opportunity strengthens your perspective as a communications professional and helps add value to your work environment and team. Volunteering with IABC has provided a sense of community where I can learn from other experienced communicators from different areas of the industry, giving me purpose and fulfilment and broadening my perspective and skills. 2. Continuous learning: Webinars and career opportunities- As a believer that we should never stop learning throughout our career, I’ve particularly enjoyed taking advantage of the many webinars IABC hosts. I’ve participated in webinars on Media Readiness for Comms Pros, Essential Tips to Unlock the Strategic Value of Internal Comms Teams, 2024's Hot Trends in Internal Comms and Employee Experience and many more. Accessing the CareerLine Job Board has also been a great tool to stay plugged into available roles across the industry. 3. Volunteering and expanding my network- Volunteering my time at events, such as the IABC/Toronto’s 2023 Communicator of the Year (COTY) event coming up on Friday, March 1, has not only put my experience into practice but introduced me to amazingly skilled communicators I have the privilege of collaborating with. I am excited about supporting the event and encourage you to join us virtually! Although I feel I have only scratched the surface of the potential and possibilities my IABC membership unlocks, I can say that it has undoubtedly impacted my mindset and career journey in a way that has enriched my motivation and drive to succeed as a communications leader. 🤔Have you ever been scared to recommend someone you know they are very good at what they do because He/She lacks good character? Let's talk about "The Value of Good Character in Volunteering and Beyond." In the world of professional growth and career advancement, I often find myself reflecting on the importance of values and character. 🤝 I'm a living proof that these principles 👇 can lead to incredible opportunities. After a speaking engagement in South Africa Regenesys, Digital Regenesys, I was invited for another session. 🎤 Not only because I delivered value but because I kept an open line of communication and was thankful for the opportunity. It was a chance to show them my value. Volunteering roles, especially in specialized fields, can be invaluable opportunities for personal and professional development. Organizations open their doors to us, allowing us to learn, grow, and make a positive impact without expecting financial compensation. It's a privilege that should never be taken for granted. However, it's disheartening to witness individuals who, after securing paid positions, undergo a sudden transformation in their behavior. 🙁 They may become less responsive, less respectful, and sometimes even arrogant. Let's remember that gratitude and humility should be our guiding principles throughout our career journey. 🙏 Here are a few thoughts on this matter: ✅Stay Grateful: Every opportunity, whether paid or not, is a steppingstone to where we want to be. Be grateful to the organizations that believed in your potential and allowed you to develop your skills. ✅Manage Communication: Effective communication is key. Keep the lines of communication open with your volunteer organization even when you transition to a paid role. They can still offer guidance and support, and your updates can inspire others. ✅Maintain Respect: Always treat everyone with respect, regardless of their role or status. Remember, bad character can overshadow even the most exceptional talent. ✅Stay Humble: No matter how successful you become, humility and a down-to-earth attitude will endear you to others and help you maintain healthy relationships. In the end, your character defines your professional legacy. Your skills may open doors, but it's your character that keeps them open. Let's strive to be professionals who not only excel in our fields but also inspire others through our integrity and humility. "What do you think is the most important quality in a professional?" 🤔 Let's share in the comment section. I am Oluwabukola Adesina, Your favorite Tech Buddie. I talk about anything related to Tech, Client relationship management, Project management, Mentorship and so many more. Feel free to reach out or connect with me and let's share values. #professionaldevelopment #charactermatters #careergrowth #gratitude #careerdevelopment #growthstrategy #professionalgrowth #volunteering #volunteerexperience #volunteersmakeadifference #character #techcareer
