🌟 Attention Volunteer Managers! 🌟 Are you looking to enhance your volunteer engagement strategies? Dive into the world of the "Five Love Languages" - a powerful tool not just for romantic relationships, but for managing volunteers effectively too! Here's how: 1️⃣ **Words of Affirmation:** Recognize and appreciate your volunteers' efforts verbally. A simple "thank you" can go a long way in boosting morale and fostering a positive environment. 2️⃣ **Quality Time:** Spend meaningful moments with your volunteers. Hosting regular check-ins or team-building activities cultivates a sense of belonging and strengthens relationships. 3️⃣ **Acts of Service:** Show your volunteers you care by supporting them in their tasks. Whether it's providing resources, training, or assistance, actions speak louder than words. 4️⃣ **Gifts:** While it's not about materialism, thoughtful gestures like tokens of appreciation or personalized notes can make volunteers feel valued and cherished. 5️⃣ **Physical Touch:** Okay, not literally! But gestures like handshakes, high-fives, or even virtual hugs can create a sense of camaraderie and connection among your team. Understanding and incorporating these love languages into your volunteer management approach can lead to happier, more engaged volunteers who feel truly appreciated for their contributions. Give it a try and watch your volunteer program flourish! 💼🤝 #VolunteerManagement #FiveLoveLanguages #Engagement #Appreciation #LeadershipDevelopment

We know that working in volunteer management can be lonely and challenging due to a lack of support both internally and externally. We also know there is a strong desire for AVM to offer more face-to-face networking opportunities and we're aware of current budget constraints across the sector and our own limited resources, so have sought a way to balance all of this. With our new Peer Support Group Lead volunteer roles, together, we can build stronger and wider networks to help you all feel better connected and supported. We're hosting some Q&A sessions about these roles on 11 July and 16 July. It's exhausting trying to deliver amazing services whilst being frustrated and isolated. We believe by having local peer support groups we can bring people together to develop, connect and empower each other and further the volunteer management profession. If you would like to take a leading role on this then take up our new volunteering opportunity and help us expand face-to-face networking opportunities across the 4 nations. Book on to a Q&A session - 11 July https://buff.ly/3xmnGbO or 16 July https://buff.ly/4eHRsIP

Two years ago today, we shared a post about the difference between creating a volunteer community that is open vs. welcoming, a process that is easy vs. accessible. Given how often I am asked about how to say no to volunteers or decline a volunteer application, I thought it might be useful to repost this one as it is all related! Open to your thoughts as well. "Is your engagement open or welcoming? Is it easy or accessible? There's a difference. Read our latest blog and share your thoughts on the matter." https://lnkd.in/gAjG4zWn

Miscommunication in Volunteer Recruitment: A Cautionary Tale I applied for a volunteering position online, I was excited to contribute my skills and time to a worthy cause. However, what unfolded was a series of confusing events that left me questioning the organization's communication protocols. After a seemingly successful online chat with a staff member, I received a congratulatory message, followed by a task with a deadline. I assumed this meant I had been selected for the role and was eager to get started. But then, I received two separate emails from different individuals within the organization, inviting me to schedule an interview for the same volunteering position. I was taken aback - hadn't I already been congratulated and assigned a task? This experience highlights the importance of clear communication in recruitment processes, especially in volunteer management. Organizations should ensure that all stakeholders are on the same page to avoid confusing and frustrating potential volunteers. In this case, it appears that there may be a lack of coordination or HR oversight, leading to unnecessary confusion and duplication of efforts. As a volunteer candidate, it's disheartening to encounter such miscommunication, which can erode trust and enthusiasm. Let this serve as a reminder to organizations to review their communication strategies and ensure a seamless experience for their valued volunteers.

Is it important to uphold professional communication standards in a volunteer setting? 🤝 As some of you may be aware, I engage in volunteer activities to enhance my skills and gain valuable experience. 🌱 Currently, I'm a volunteer leader at one of the nonprofit organizations. 🙌 I recently had a volunteer who is a team lead tell me the technology that I use in my team is unsuitable and the candidates that I want to be onboarded were unfit as well. They wanted to resign from their volunteer position since they realized they were unfit for their position especially when I thought they were a great fit. 😟🔄 Me: Why didn't you tell me this sooner? Volunteer team lead: I did not know the scope of the project completely until I was onboarded. Me: I told them to look for a potential team lead since they agreed to help out. Volunteer team lead: They told me "That's not my problem". Me: I was like excuse me! Volunteer team lead: I do not owe you anything, it is volunteering. Me: I know it is unpaid, but you agreed to help out as a volunteer. You are acting unprofessional right now and wasted my time onboarding you including conducting the interview. Volunteer team lead: I'm acting professional and did not waste anybody time. Me: Saying "That's not my problem" is considered unprofessional. Volunteer team lead: Have a great day! I hope you find the great candidate! Afterward, I decided to fire that volunteer due to a lack of professionalism instead of accepting their resignation. 🔥🚫 What went wrong with the volunteer: ❌ Lack of professionalism. ❌ Not making their commitments. ❌ Not taking responsibility. ❌ Wanted to get paid when they agreed they would do it for free. ❌ Not willing to upgrade their skillset. What could of gone right: ✔ Completed their last remaining tasks. ✔ Maintained their professionalism by communicating their concerns respectfully. ✔ Kept the volunteer position to improve their skillset. ✔ Potentially lead to a letter of recommendation. Last part, the volunteer did not realize they were fired from their volunteer position by saying "Thank you for understanding, best of luck." 😂 In conclusion, the same level of work ethic and professionalism you show in a volunteer setting will apply to a real work setting which can bring benefits or consequences. 🔄💼 #professionalcommunication #volunteer #workenvironment
