It goes without saying: we use stories every day in conversations...in person and on social media. They’re most instinctual way we have to communicate an idea, an example, a point, a feeling. But, if you’re like me, for years I had no idea what people meant when they said to use stories in a business or professional context, beyond the occasional anecdote. So, I thought I’d start off this Monday morning and simply share one of the most effective persuasive storytelling frameworks you’ve never heard of that’s practical and easy to use. It’s called Monroe's Motivated Sequence. It was developed by communication scholar Alan Monroe. It’s a super simple 5-step framework for persuading an audience to take action. Here are the five parts for: Attention - Grab their interest with a startling fact or question. Need - Highlight the problem and make them feel the need for change. Satisfaction - Present your solution and its benefits to satisfy that need. Visualization - Help them visualize the positive results of adopting your solution. Action - Wrap up with a clear call-to-action. Whether you're pitching investors, rallying your team, or promoting a new product, Monroe's Motivated Sequence provides a proven structure that’s focused on achieving a desired outcome. It recognizes that people need sufficient reason to change before they will act. By following these steps, you can bring your audience through that decision journey. I've found this approach extremely effective for crafting persuasive messaging. I hope you also find value in Monroe's framework.
