I help aspiring Data Analysts develop their data skills through articles and tips. 6 years as a Data Professional from Analyst to Manager. Data consultant @ Trend Labs.
It took me 7 years to master the art of data storytelling. I've created this 5-step framework so you can master it in 3 minutes: 1/ Clear objective and plot. A good data story has a clear, specific objective Once you've got your objective, craft the plot: Introduction: Start with a bang. Headline stat or big problem Body: Develop the story Climax: Resolution/fix Conclude: Summarise and recommend 2: Make the story interesting. We've all been there—death by PowerPoint! Grab the attention of your audience and keep it. Some ideas on how to do this: Simplicity. Surprises/shock factor. Firmness. Authenticity. Be engaging, clear, and know your objective. 3: Think about who you're presenting to. A group of directors will need a completely different approach than a group of other data folk. My general rule of thumb is: The higher up the organisation you go, the shorter the pitch and the less technical the language. 4: Choose the right visual representation. Humans only have so much brain power. You don't want your audience to get to the end with no energy left. Use the right visuals and make it as easy as possible to understand. Minimal colours, proper labels, etc. 5: Practice, practice, practice. Finally, what is the best way to nail the delivery of data stories? Practice. Present to a diverse set of people. Check what they understood and the message they took from it. This will help with confident delivery and handling any questions And that's it! TL;DR: - Clear objective and plot - Make the story interesting - Think about your audience - Choose the right visuals - Practice Thank you for your time. I hope you found this valuable. Unveiling Insights: The Art of Storytelling in Data Analysis 💡✨ Data analysis is not just about drowning in a sea of numbers and drowning in charts. It's about turning those digits into a captivating narrative that not only informs but also captivates. Why does storytelling matter in this data-driven world? • Human Connection: Have you ever felt lost in a spreadsheet? Storytelling transforms data into relatable tales that connect with people on a personal level. It makes complex insights relatable and accessible, fostering a deeper connection between the data and its audience. • Clarity for Decision-Makers: Imagine decoding a complex puzzle without a manual. A compelling story simplifies complex findings, aiding decision-makers to grasp the importance of the data and take informed action. • Memorable Insights Stick: Stories stick. By embedding data in a narrative, you create memorable experiences that linger, enhancing retention and understanding. In essence, the story becomes a vessel for the data, ensuring it leaves an enduring imprint on the minds of those who engage with it. • Engagement: Engage your audience emotionally. A story, thoughtfully constructed around data, keeps stakeholders invested in the narrative. This sustained engagement not only facilitates a deeper understanding of the data but also fosters collaboration among diverse stakeholders. Through the medium of storytelling, analysts can bridge gaps, align perspectives, and create a shared narrative that propels the collective understanding of the data. • Contextual Understanding: Numbers without context are like maps without legends. A story contextualizes data, A well-crafted story provides the necessary backdrop, illuminating the context that surrounds the data points. This added context helps us see the bigger picture, making sure insights are not just correct but also based on a detailed understanding of the situation. Data storytelling is the vibrant, narrative soul that breathes life into data analysis, turning insights into compelling journeys. Embrace the art of storytelling in your data analysis journey. It's not just about the what; it's about the why and how. 🚀📊 #datastorytelling #analyticsinsights #datadrivendecisions

In my #datastorytelling book and workshops, I highlight the importance of configuring your charts to your message or main takeaway. Yes, it’s important to choose the right chart for your data, but you can’t always roll with the default configuration and expect it to convey your key points effectively. In this example, on the left, I’ve used a bold color 🟠 to highlight Region 2 that I want the audience to focus on. While that’s a great first step, my work isn’t done because the highlighted region doesn’t have a clear baseline assigned to it. 🤷♂️ Why is a baseline useful and necessary? A clear baseline (in this case, the horizontal x-axis) makes it easier for the audience to compare the values and observe trends. Without it, you may be forced to label all the values, which can add clutter to the chart that might not be necessary. A simple adjustment to the order of the categories gives Region 2 the baseline instead of Region 3. Since the chart's highlighting doesn’t focus on Region 3, it shouldn't own the baseline. By giving Region 2 the baseline, I’m more intentional about the chart's configuration and how it conveys key messages to the audience. This technique is a good example of why data storytelling requires unique approaches to visualizing data that don’t apply to visualizations used for analysis or reporting.
