Non-Executive Director in various organisations across health, local government, housing, social care & education and independent consultant
Governance of Multi Academy Trusts This report is very welcomed and review much needed. The responsibilities of trustees as directors under company and charity law and increasing regulatory requirements and responding to significant sector pressures and risks place a significant burden on trustees both personally and professionally. This demands us to attract the best people with the range of professional, business and sector related skills needed to steer the MAT through challenging times and leverage the opportunities for new ways of working; streamlining and standardising processes; income growth; improving governance, risk management, control and assurance; growth and embracing opportunities for collaborative working with sector partners and corporates around for example work, skills, apprenticeship pipelines, healthy and fulfilling lifes and mental health. Recruitment can be difficult and good people often have heavy external career commitments and as other sectors have increasingly moved to remunerating non execs (trustees) those individuals who have taken to portfolio careers, early retirement, work/life balances are often being attracted to those remunerated roles. I know from my wide range of board roles over many years both voluntary and remunerated that remunerated roles will often attract many applicants whilst for a similar person a voluntary role can often attract only one or two, sometimes if you are lucky. Of course there are exceptions but when you hear of examples where remunerated roles have attracted well over a hundred applicants that tells a story. At the end of the day the board is overseeing the performance of well paid executives and this is currently being done on a voluntary basis with all the risk. Appropriate remuneration of non-execs rewarding for what they bring to the table and the impact they make changes the dynamics of the board and ensures the chair can hold others to account for presence and contribution. Is this something for consideration to address the recruitment challenges? Really welcome your thoughts.

Are leaders a dying breed? Some experts think that certain regions like the UK have neglected to encourage #Leadership skills for the past few generations. I don't expect us to lose leadership as a skill anytime soon, however - I think true leadership is only really learnt through experiences that can't be taught in a classroom. While the younger generations may struggle for a bit, I think it'll right itself before too long as they adapt and learn from the situations and the management styles around them. What do you think? Are leaders an endangered species?

how committees work and how they should work is an important distinction. The number of Directorships held by any one Director and especially any Conflict of Interest should be made clear. The separation of the roles of Chairman from CEO, vital. Abdication of responsibility to Committee,s is all to often the practice. When bad things happen they are used both as a defence and reason for failure. Boards should meet often, receive accurate, timely information, on short agenda items and meet without the CEO at the end of each meeting. #Governance #Leadership #prevention #Oversight #transparency #honesty
