Unleashing the Power of Networking 🌐 Throughout my time in grad school, the mantra has always been: "Network, network, network!" But, how do we practice it effectively, especially when reaching out to people who might seem out of reach? Here are some tips I've found that work best for me. 🔹 Find the Common Ground: Before you engage, do a quick check on their background (LinkedIn is a nice place to start). Whether it's a shared alma mater, hometown, or past experience, it's a great starting point. For instance, I often find connections through shared experiences in Florida or NYC. 🔹 Engage Organically: Expanding on the first point, you should not simply regurgitate every fact you know about someone when you meet them. Seamlessly integrate mutual interests into your conversation. For example, "I noticed you worked in New York; I interned there last summer!" Locations are a safe starting point that can lead into further conversation. 🔹 Optimizing Virtual Connections: When reaching out online, make it hassle-free for them. Propose your availability for the week, and be open to connecting with their scheduling assistant if they have one. 🔹 Embrace Active Listening: Your first meeting shouldn't be a monologue. Listen keenly, let them steer, and absorb. Often, they'll provide insights you hadn't considered, and it sets the stage for future interactions. These strategies have transformed my networking journey. Would love to know, what's been your game-changer in building meaningful professional connections? I'm always looking for more tips and tricks! Pictured below: One of my favorite pictures I've taken recently in downtown Durham at sunset.

Reflecting on a recent corporate event where I was accompanied by a junior colleague who asked, "Can you show me how to do it?" This simple question about networking made me think of my early days when the concepts of 'networking' or 'building a network' were quite daunting. What is networking really? For me, it's about forming and sustaining trustworthy relationships. It can start with a simple hello, a compliment, a question or a discussion on a random topic. There are no strict rules for networking; it means connecting with people and keeping those connections active. Don't stop at exchanging business cards or sending a message on LinkedIn or an email. But how do you stay connected or what do you say? This is so much easier now with social media. Connect, comment, appreciate, show support and share. This is the easiest and most effective way to nurture relationships. Once in a while, pick up the phone and have a conversation. However, don't disregard the power of knowledge and skill-building. Without meaningful connections or conversations, sustaining professional relationships can become challenging. Although, it doesn't have to be about work always. Be genuine in your efforts and stay consistent. Over time, you will be noticed, trust will build and that's how your network will grow. #Networking #BuildANetwork #HowToNetwork #ProfessionalRelationships #Growth #GrowYourNetwork Pitchfork Partners Strategic Consulting

When it comes to professional networking, connecting is only the beginning. Our favorite networking tip is: connect on purpose, for a purpose. So don’t cold-connect randomly. Review the person’s profile and figure out why you want to connect before you reach out to someone online, says Bill McCormick, founder and owner of Digi-Sales (All Selling Is Social). Look at their recent activity, their connections, the groups they belong to, their code samples, projects and interests to see what you have in common. Are you interested in learning from them, collaborating on a side project, or soliciting their opinions on the latest tools or career options? Being intentional and focused on a goal, purpose or mutual interest can help you focus your initial outreach message and make your subsequent interactions more meaningful to a new connection, McCormick explains. “Networking is all about serving other people." Treat the digital space like a face-to-face encounter by considering the needs and interests of the person on the other side of the table (digital or physical). #DiceCareerAdvice #ProfessionalNetworking #NetworkingTips
