NETWORKING; THE UNDERGROUND ROADMAP. Tolu is a software engineer and a close friend of mine who is also an introvert. However, there’s something different about Tolu that I admire so much, let me emphasize that Tolu works in a big tech firm with extra side gigs making 7 figures monthly. I sometimes wonder how he gets all of this done without having a profile online or sharing his works because he likes being in his space. One day I decide to have a conversation with him and ask questions, some of which I will be sharing. HOW DO YOU BUILD YOUR NETWORK? 1️⃣. Be so good at what you do: ✅ Aim for mastery. When you are valuable, no matter where you are in any part of the world people will come for your skills, most especially when you possess the top 5% skills. 2️⃣. Join a community: 🥂 Being a member of a group or club is not enough, actively participating within the channels can help you get spotlighted. This can be done by answering questions, walking a team member through a problem they have into clarity, all of these will enhance your presence. 3️⃣. Volunteer: 🫱🏾🫲🏼 When you volunteer for a cause, you can either be passive or actively present, I would recommend you pick up the latter. This help people to grasp the perception of who you are as your engagement and communication skills with the team or individuals will be noticed. However, if you don’t want your face to be seen, you can join the back office volunteers. 4️⃣. Active participation at events: ✍️ Another place you can connect heavily is events. Being present at a tech event or engagement is not enough, it is only the first step. The next step is intentional engagement/ networking, connecting with industry experts and friends you admire. Let them know that you respect their works and you’d like to have them in your network. 5️⃣. Let someone light your path:💡 More than a mentor, you need an advocator, they can be your small circle of friends or senior expert that knows the quality of your value and can mention your name in a room where your skill is needed. They are influential and publicly known figures, you must be worth it for them to put up their reputation as a form of influence for you. It amplifies your success rate. In conclusion, at some point you still have to put yourself out there, it might not be heavily, but it is a way of having your digital footprint out there. You might not have to put your face out there fully, but improving your roadmap just makes your work journey easy and it makes opportunities much more easier to access as it skips the process of employers validating your knowledge because they’ve seen your work overtime. #networking #growth #tech #mentor #communityengagement #career

This could be articles, blog posts, or even presentations that showcase your expertise and contribute to your industry. Follow Up Effectively: After meeting someone new, follow up promptly. These casual environments provide opportunities for spontaneous conversations and connections. Utilize Alumni Networks: Tap into your alumni network. Many universities and colleges have robust alumni networks that can provide valuable connections and advice. Volunteer: Volunteer for industry-related events or charitable organizations.
