Presentations are tricky. If you ever had to condense 10 months of work into a 4 minute presentation, you know what I mean. You want it to be perfect. The problem? We often think of presentations as 5-10 minute monologues with a standing ovation at the end. That's YouTube. A presentation to the board of a company looks more like this: You prepared this presentation for the last two weeks, but then have to change 70% of it due to changing requirements. By now, you're ready to get the board's approval and move on. You start speaking and 30 seconds in you're interrupted. "Can you please go back to the overview slide?" A short moment of panic: "What now?" If you let panic overtake, you'd probably do this: Go back to the slide and start explaining. Guessing what they want to see, you're all over the place. The result? Confusion & likely even more questions. Here's what has helped me in the past: 1. Go back to the overview slide. 2. Let them look at it. 3. Don't say a word. 4. Wait for a question or ask to move on after 15 seconds. The very simple reason? You have no idea if they have a question, need more time to digest or didn't pay attention in the first place. Don't make assumptions. Stay calm & wait for more feedback.

It's finally here: presentation time. Your heart is racing, you feel scattered, and you start getting short of breath. If you've ever felt this way, you're not alone: most people experience these signs of anxiety before important presentations. Fortunately, there are some ways we can alleviate that anxiety. According to SOAP Presentations, 90% of the anxiety we feel before making a presentation comes from lack of preparation. The best strategy to tackle presentation anxiety is to plan ahead. Steve Jobs himself made sure he was prepared 2 days in advance of a presentation. The first step is to start with your script. Spending 70% of your time focusing on writing and structuring your talking points can lead to better success than if you didn't. What are the next steps? You want to maximize impact for your client📌 Use Narrative Hierarchy Share your idea with your team, boss, or stakeholders - this is what you'll present to the client. Provide a pre-read if possible, and let everyone know you'll be co-creating the presentation. Summarize it in your presentation. Then say: “Let's imagine you're the client – who will you present this idea to?” 1. This gets you to think 2 steps ahead 2. You could also craft some questions to ask your clients. 3. This makes the meeting interactive P.S. My 1 Rule When It Comes To Presentations Once you've prepared for the presentation, stop thinking about it. If you have: • put in the work • prepared properly • gotten your team ready to go Then, there is no reason to overthink, rethink, and try to rescript your ideas. In my experience, anxiety only comes from being under-prepared. When I know I could have worked harder, when I don’t have notes together, and when my team doesn’t know the direction we want to take the conversation, then I struggle. I get nervous and second-guess my approach. The good news: These are all variables that you can control before you walk into a meeting. I follow one steadfast rule when it comes to presentations: come prepared but then stop thinking. We have to give our brains space to think, feel, and notice the energy in the room when we walk in. If you're constantly thinking about what you've rehearsed and what you're going to say, and you’re over-prepared, it does more harm than good. So make sure you prepare, but don't over-prepare. When you get in the room, just let things flow.
