Facilitation is more than just guiding a community, team or meeting - it's about creating an environment where diverse perspectives can thrive and innovative solutions can emerge. Facilitation is an art. It requires maintaining a good pace of interaction, gathering everyone into the discussion, asking probing questions, summarizing others’ input, highlighting agreements, encouraging differences of opinion, and assisting with consensus building. It moves a community from divergent thinking (creating many unique ideas) to convergent thinking (forming a group decision). This process prevents discussions from degenerating into critiques and self-interest defense. By establishing ground rules and norms early on, facilitators can help teams navigate conflicts, fostering a culture of respect and collaboration. What do these situations have in common as a leader? Running a weekly meeting, chairing a governance group, coordinating a problem-solving brainstorm session with a cross functional team, upskilling a group of people on a particular skill. You’re facilitating. Often overlooked as a leadership skill, group facilitation is not only a super useful capability to develop as a leader, but also something you’re probably doing more often than you think – even if you’re not conscious of it. And when facilitated well, a meeting can boost team dynamics, get better outcomes and improve team decision making and engagement. Group facilitation isn’t something you should leave to chance. Nor should you consider it an afterthought to your leadership practice. Encouraging dialogue, sparking creative thinking, gaining diverse perspectives from everyone in the room and applying the right decision-making approach… these are all signs of capable team facilitation. Facilitating groups of people well toward a common goal is a skill you should put some elbow grease into. In this week’s #FridayFind I share 14 tips for facilitating groups. Work on these and you’ll start to see your team work together more effectively. https://smpl.is/7s3qz

"The point here isn’t to be rigid or controlling about these conversations, but rather to know what you’re doing—which type of conversation you’re having and what type of outcome you’re seeking." A great Fast Company article on #communication - specifically being #intentional about what what kind of #conversation #managers are having with #TeamMembers. I found the construct of three different kinds of conversations - #learning, #design, and #fulfillment - quite useful. Thank you Grayson James - this is good stuff! #leadership #empathy #concise #IntentionalCommunication #management #work #workplace #TeamDynamics #optimization #people #culture
