Axel Arigato recently opened a flagship store in London’s Seven Dials. The new 2,500-square-foot store in Covent Garden continues to build on the brand's commitment to creating interesting and unique store interiors in the form of gallery-like spaces. The footwear and ready-to-wear brand describes itself as a “socially-driven brand with the goal to bring people together through the power of positivity, community and memorable experiences” - Sounds like something we can get behind here at Agile Retail! What is most impressive, however, is their commitment to physical retail as a growth channel despite their product line expansion! Axel Arigato was founded in 2014. In 2018 they launched their first ready-to-wear line (now accounting for 20% of their business). They also release their apparel in the form of a “Drop of the Week” to engage with their community more regularly and keep a tight grip on stock and waste. All the while they have continued to open new stores! This breadth of work is, of course, impressive. However, their continued development and expansion within physical retail is even more impressive; they clearly recognise that physical stores are an ESSENTIAL channel for growth and success in the retail sector. Even their physical presence on store shelves has granularity; The brand has nine flagship stores globally while also being stocked by about 250 retailers worldwide such as Selfridges, Ssense, and Level Shoes. All of this impressive growth and expansion in so many directions is a testament to their focused approach to retail and in particular physical stores. Axel Arigato’s biggest market is the UK, so it is no surprise that they have opened a flagship store in Covent Garden. As we all know, the Halo Effect from an IRL location improves both online and offline sales. The journey to 50 years in Footwear Retail for me continues. The Happy New Year has begun, with new budgets and plans. How appropriate to tell a story about budgets and plans. This story goes back to early 1995. We had finished opening most of the Kmart stores in Alaska and Hawaii. I began working on the Guam project. Parking on the roof, stockroom in the basement and the most amazing Kmart Shoe Department in the middle. We started with the sales information we had on Hawaii. We looked at "space allocation", and used the numbers to plan. As an example, in Hawaii, we did about 24% of our footwear sales in ladies sandals as I remember. Shouldn't we do the same in Guam? Who could argue, right? I went to NJ for a week to plan the merchandise for Guam. When it ended, we had about 60K pairs of Kmart shoes on it's way across the Pacific to Guam. Because of shipping, Paul K. and the Team raised the prices of all pairs over $10 by $2 and under $10 by $1. What happened next, no one could have expected. We had a little Friends and Family event on 5/9/95 that did $10555 (impressive right?) in sales and another $2115 the next day for the few that worked the event. On 5/11/95, when we opened to the public, we did $87295 in sales, in the shoe department, of a Kmart store, in 1995, yes just shoes. I have no idea what Kmart did. Yes, $87295.00! We finished the week (5 days) at #209887 in sales. As the retail years go by, that Kmart was #1 in the chain, as Famous Footwear arrived, the #1 in the chain and of course, Flip Flop Shops, #1 in the chain. The lesson is........if you want to open a successful retail store, go to Guam. The real lesson is study the data and plan and work the plan and you will get the right results. The subdued consumer sentiment is also evident in the footwear market, where the gap between private consumer spending and spending on shoes is widening as consumer prices rise. In 2023, total sales of shoes reached a market volume of 9.6 billion euros, which corresponds to growth of 3.8% in the previous year. It’s not all bad news. The downward trend recorded by the TCF deflated retail sales index from April onwards remains above last year’s figures, and consumer confidence is about to reach a positive threshold. However, consumer footwear prices show no signs of slowing down, and, above all, imports in the category seem to be declining.
