At the Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) Opening Ceremony, #MPA announced 3 key initiatives to increase the competencies of the global maritime workforce. 📈 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 (𝗠𝗘𝗧𝗙): MPA signed a Letter of Intent with 22 industry partners to set up the METF to address the growing need for maritime personnel and seafarers trained in handling vessels using clean marine fuels. The setting up of METF follows from recommendations put forth by the Tripartite Advisory Panel, formed in early 2023 by Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF) and supported by MPA, to identify emerging and future skills and competencies to build for the maritime workforce. With the increasing adoption of zero or near-zero emission fuels in the maritime industry, there is a pressing need to equip personnel with the necessary skills to operate these ships safely and efficiently. METF will provide training in the safe handling, bunkering, and management of incidents involving alternative fuels such as methanol and ammonia. The facility is expected to train around 10,000 seafarers and maritime personnel by the 2030s, contributing to the global effort for decarbonisation. 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗹 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: The Singapore Maritime Academy has launched the region's first methanol handling training course as part of the METF curriculum. Accredited by MPA, the course covers operational and safety protocols for methanol fuelling, including firefighting components. Basic and Advanced courses will be offered monthly, with potential for expansion based on industry demand. The course is open to all maritime personnel and seafarers from April 2024. 𝗠𝗣𝗔-𝗦𝗠𝗙 𝗝𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀: The MPA-SMF Joint Office for Talent and Skills was established to coordinate and drive tripartite efforts by the government, industry, and unions to upskill the Maritime Singapore workforce across shore-based and seafaring jobs. The Joint Office aims to provide workers with greater flexibility in acquiring new skills by converting relevant short-term courses or on-the-job training into accredited competency-based micro-credentials. These efforts align with MPA's commitment to ensuring Singapore continues to have access to a diversity of maritime talents and experts, while addressing the emerging skills required in the maritime industry, such as maritime cybersecurity, digitalisation, and sustainability. In this insightful interview with #SAFETY4SEA, Georgia Spencer-Rowland, Shipping Policy Manager at International Chamber of Shipping, shed light on the maritime industry's forward momentum towards sustainability, emphasizing the importance of embracing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. As the industry sails towards the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) net-zero by 2050 ambition, the focus is not only on decarbonizing through the adoption of low and zero-carbon fuels but also on ensuring the maritime workforce is equipped for the evolving landscape. This includes the critical aspect of fostering an equitable transition, ensuring that the shift towards a greener economy creates fair and inclusive opportunities for all, thus making the maritime sector an attractive field for a diverse and skilled workforce. Considering these developments, it's evident that organizations like #NAMEPA play a crucial role in steering the maritime industry towards a more sustainable and environmentally responsible future. NAMEPA’s stance on promoting sustainable maritime industry best practices, advocacy for environmental protection, and commitment to education aligns with the broader industry's objectives and efforts as outlined by Spencer-Rowland. As we navigate towards a sustainable future, the collaboration between associations like NAMEPA and key industry stakeholders will be instrumental in ensuring the maritime sector not only meets but exceeds its ESG ambitions. #SaveOurSeas #ESG #NAMEPA #MSPProgram #Sustainability #Maritime #SAFETY4SEA To learn more about NAMEPA’s Maritime Sustainability Passport® Program visit https://ow.ly/iVmH50RfcLr ESG performance is a key differentiator in the maritime industry (https://ow.ly/5OwG50RfcLq) https://ow.ly/RYqU50RfcLs

The only way to improve the shipping and shipping industry is to participate actively. Your suggestions are valuable to ears-that-be and powers-that-be to know the ground issues directly from you. most of the information does not reach as organisation filter the issues and hence never reach regulator.
