What is complexity? How does life (the most obvious example of a complex adaptive system) actually work? In this brief snippet, Dr. Neil Theise -- liver pathologist at NYU Grossman School of Medicine and author of the beautiful new book "Notes on Complexity" -- describes the 4 principles of complexity. Free and accessible ways to optimize your #brainhealth: * Contact with #nature - The practice of #forestbathing has been linked to better physical and #mentalhealth including lower blood pressure and cortisol levels. * Social connection - Loneliness is a risk factor for poor health outcomes including premature mortality. Social #connection has been shown to improve #healthoutcomes and workplace productivity. * Movement - Moderate movement - for example, #walking - increases levels of brain derived neurotrophic factor, promoting the growth of new brain cells. Since the cortisol released during high intensity exercise might counteract the effects of BDNF, it is recommended to incorporate moderate #movement as part of a well-rounded fitness plan. * Environmental health - Indoor plants can help improve our #wellbeing. It's important to remember to intentionally take breaks from the stress! Many thanks to the Center for BrainHealth and Dr. Sanjay Gupta for a wonderful presentation on neuroplasticity and brain optimization! I'm excited and grateful for the opportunity to share core education and experiential learning on #integrativehealth with the #physicianassistant students at UTSW and the community members of Rosa es Rojo™.
