Silicon Ranch is proud to share that our own Ashley Upkins has been elected and sworn in as the President-Elect of the National Bar Association (NBA) and will serve as the first woman from Tennessee to serve in the role. The NBA was founded in 1925 by members of the African American legal community who, on account of their color, and as permitted under then-existing segregation laws, were denied membership into the American Bar Association (which was and remains the largest voluntary association of lawyers in the country). In the face of this racial exclusion, the twelve founding members established a new bar association, whose mission as etched in the organization’s charter was to “advance the science of jurisprudence, uphold the honor of the legal profession, promote social intercourse among the members of the American Bar, and protect the civil and political rights of all citizens of the several states and the United States.” Ashley has been an active member of the NBA since her law school days and previously served in several high-ranking leadership roles. She now will become the 83rd President of the NBA and continue the pathbreaking legacy of its many prominent past Presidents as she serves the interests of 67,000 African American legal professionals.
