In the last week there has been lot of miscommunication wrt. a new HVDC line connecting UK and Denmark. Length 764 km , power transmission capability = 1400 MW or 1.4 GW. Its impressive but not more impressive than Chinese HVDC links. Its claim to fame is part of it is underwater cable and rest is overhead lines.
At least 5 projects and China and Brazil and Congo (Yes Congo) and Talcher in India ( 7 in total) are ahead in transmitted DC power. They are all overhead TR lines of course overhead TR lines cost 1/7th (CEGB study) than under the sea lines. This is also true for 3 phase AC lines > 132 KV.
This is very serious to feed false information to engineers on Linkedin.
Here is a list of the longest HVDC lines and those which transport the most amount of power.
1. Belo Monte-Rio de Janeiro transmission line, Brazil – 2,543km; Power - 11.2 GW
2. Brazil again Rio Madeira transmission link, Brazil – 2,385km; Power = 7 GW
4. Jinping-Sunan HVDC transmission line, China – 2,090km
The Jinping-Sunan transmission link in China is an 800kV UHVDC transmission line. Owned by State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC), the 7.2GW transmission link was put into operation in December 2012.
The line passes through eight Chinese provinces to transmit power generated. The AC Lined voltage at both ends of the line is 525kV.
5. Xiangjiaba-Shanghai transmission line, China – 1,980km, Impressive HVDC link in China transmitting 7.2 GW over /800KV Bipolar transmission. It was built by ABB and feature AC line voltage of 525 KV at botjh ends.
8. North Agra HVDC link : !700km ; 8 GW converter capacity. designer - Hitachi Energy.
