The Pillar Two team is delighted to be in Melbourne for the UN Global Compact Network Australia’s 2023 Annual Dialogue on Business and Human Rights. The Dialogue brings together a range of stakeholders from business, government, civil society, academia and the investor community to discuss how we’re tracking on driving business respect for human rights and what needs to improve. This year’s theme is Bringing Home the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs). Day 1’s discussion focused on international policy developments and their relevance to Australia, elevating First Nations’ voices and ensuring a rights-respecting pathway to Net Zero. Key themes and takeaways include: • Human rights harms happen at home: The discussion explored the broad range of human rights risks that Australian businesses face domestically, including the rights of First Nations peoples, discrimination and harassment, workplace health and safety, privacy, climate change and the environment and modern slavery. This highlighted the importance of conducting human rights due diligence across Australian operations and supply chains, not just overseas. • Look beyond modern slavery: The Modern Slavery Act has provided a key entry point for Australian businesses and boards to engage with human rights issues. Yet, by focusing only on modern slavery, businesses are likely to miss a range of other salient human rights risks. The importance of situating a modern slavery response within a broader human rights framework was a key takeaway. This also aligns with growing stakeholder expectations and international legislative developments. • The importance of policy alignment: Discussion of the fast-evolving international regulatory landscape highlighted the need for policy alignment across jurisdictions. The variation across legislative frameworks and approach further underlined the need for greater alignment with international standards including the UNGPs. • The voice of rights-holders provides a North Star: Rights-holders must be meaningfully engaged in shaping business and government actions that impact them. This includes talking to impacted workers and communities in designing and implementing a just transition to Net Zero; and centring the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in developing a Reconciliation Action Plan, engaging around the Voice referendum and more broadly understanding and responding to impacts on their rights in the workplace, value chain and broader community. It was great to connect with #bizhumanrights friends and colleagues from across Australia and the world. Bring on Day 2! #bizhumanrights #susty #esg #ausbiz

Safeguarding a lasting legacy for our children is a must for a prosperous 21st-century! In full support of Madame Georgieva, Managing Director of IMF on creating generational legacy. AI education is essential for empowering children to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital landscape and participate meaningfully in shaping the future of AI. By fostering a deeper understanding of AI technologies and their implications, we can equip future generations with the skills and knowledge needed to navigate ethical dilemmas, contribute to innovation, and harness the potential of AI for the benefit of society. Narratives exploring AI education for children highlights the importance of preparing them for a future where AI will play an increasingly prominent role in their personal and professional lives. Emphasis on the need for inclusive and equitable access to AI education, the role of educators and policymakers in designing relevant and engaging curriculum, and the ethical imperative of promoting AI literacy to ensure a just and sustainable future for all is very important. A discerning conversation, It was great to attend this conversation about my passion for economics, business and sustainability. Hearing Kristalina Georgieva discussed the plans to increase x13 the global GDP through investing in people, climate and technology. Was like going back to my bachelors studies and consolidating years of studies into actions of a very important Fund which is crucial for the world economy. Kristalina discussed the fact that GDP is driven by productivity levels and these are driven by people who have been well trained and educated in their fields. The "technological waves" as you correctly mentioned, such as: steam power, electricity and now AI. Demand us to invest in our educational development. Adam Smith mentioned that the economy improves with educated people and more recently Gavin Lewis consolidated years of research concluding that education is a key for success. "All roads lead to Rome". It is still highly important to emphasise that without education everything remains static. In my generation we care more about the environment, I can see my friends and myself trying to take the eco-friendly alternatives and it is fascinating to hear from you that although we lack the funding, we already have all the solutions needed for "Net Zero". I concur with you, the main focus of investors and policy makers should be the "Climate" and we should be looking at the tax system for CO2 emissions. Thank you for sharing your personal experience about your granddaughter, it outlines how difficult it is to imagine life without technology. After all, it has improved the average mortality rates, reduced the time we need to finalise a task and created new employment markets. Yes, sometimes we are struggling with social media and its unlimited scrolling, which becomes a procrastination method to cope with life. Hence, why we should revisit one of my ideas about investing in emotional intelligence and adopt it in the educational system. All in all, one of the most joyful ways in which I can experience life is by cultivating my curious mind and your conversation with Kings College at Cambridge, planted multiple thought provoking seeds in me. It also gave me the opportunity to meet more high performing individuals. I left Cambridge with happiness for doing what makes me happy and with a great desire to talk about all of these interesting facts with my best friend. Notwithstanding that we have now lost contact, I am sure we would have spent days discussing the subject as we used to frequently do. Surrounding yourself with high performers increase your productivity by 12% doing the opposite reduces your productivity by 20%. "Surround yourself with high performers and with people whose eyes shine when they see you". Thank you Kristalina Georgieva I am confident "Keynes" would have been satisfied.
