On this Earth Day save the earth by laying Initiatives to nurture it for a better Tommrow. 1. Recycling programs: Implementing recycling programs in our community and workplace to reduce waste and promote responsible waste management. 2. Community clean-up events: Organizing clean-up events to remove litter and debris from our environment, such as beaches, parks, and rivers. 3. Tree planting initiatives: Planting trees in our community to increase green spaces, encourage biodiversity, and improve air quality. 4. Sustainable gardening: Adopting sustainable gardening practices, such as composting, using native plants, and avoiding chemicals, to reduce our environmental impact. 6. Our Clothing Collection Bin Program: Focuses on recycling and reusing, in order to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.When you donate your unwanted clothing to us, we carefully sort and inspect each item to determine its condition. Wearable clothing items are then cleaned and repaired, if necessary, before being resold in our thrift stores or online marketplace. Mr. Hawari, a member of the Dhobi community near Narayanghat, Bharatpur, has been involved in the traditional business of cloth washing for five generations. Initially, his family washed clothes directly in the Narayani River, but now they utilize locally-made machines and tap water from the municipality. Despite changes in their surroundings, such as the growth of hotels and lodges in the area, Mr. Hawari continues his family's legacy. During an interview with Ms. Manisha Bhattarai, our GESI and safeguarding specialist for project CAP, Mr. Hawari highlighted how he has adapted to modern methods while preserving traditional practices. He emphasized that by using tap water and mechanized washing, he contributes to reducing pollution in the Narayani River compared to traditional river washing methods. His dedication not only sustains a longstanding family tradition but also demonstrates a mindful approach to environmental sustainability in his profession. Mr. Hawari stands as a beacon of inspiration for other river-dependent families whose livelihoods are intertwined with nature. Project CAP (Collaborative Approach for Preventing Plastic Leakages in Rivers of Nepal) under Plastic Free Rivers and Seas for South Asia is a project that aims to divert plastic waste into product value chain from landfills and rivers by strengthening plastic waste collection mechanism and strengthening recycling efforts through the introduction of technological innovations. While doing so, integrated plastic collection model will be developed by engaging and training vulnerable communities including dhobi community. To support the action endeavor of "establishing Plastic Managed Communities," the existing waste collection and management stakeholder, Nepal Clean Environment Creation Centre in Kirtipur, came forward and signed an MOU this week. We are grateful to have this stakeholder, which is proactive in obtaining commitments for separate plastic waste collection from the source and making an impact on recycling and upcycling.
