Germany 🇩🇪 has a strong relationship not only with African countries, but also with the African Union. During negotiations between Germany and the AU in 2022, Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) made 60 million euros available to support the AU with infrastructure expansion. Additionally, to strengthen the implementation of the Maputo Protocol, which supports gender equality, BMZ provided 3 million euros for the AU to support these efforts. #InfrastructureExpansion #AU #AfricanUnion #BMZ #GermanyInAfrica #MaputoProtocol #GenderEquality #Germany

Your Monday needs the most accurate, powerful and least sugar-coated breakdown of how "feminist foreign policy" is abused by Western States to perpetuate violations of international law and going against the very same principles (decolonial) feminist foreign policy stands for.
This is how feminist foreign policy can perpetuate global hierarchies and in the name of gender equality, militarize. #ffp #feministforeignpolicy #wps #Yemen #Syria #germany #feminism

Interesting question... Can you be a global leader when you are not a national one? Can you bring global gender equality, for example, when you are unable to bring it to your own country? Do good intentions mean that we cannot do any harm? The presumption of doing no wrong is deeply embedded in how foreign aid was conceptualized and it is being implemented. Yet, the modern system of international development/ foreign aid has led to extreme negative consequences. I explore this and other questions in my upcoming book "Fetishizing Altruism: Power, International aid and the Utilitarianism of life" #foreignaid #internationaldevelopment #powerdistribution

👏 👏 And also, decolonizing foreign policies (most of which are sometimes best on the premise that the West knows what's best universally) and International Relations (which is based on a powerful set of repressions and amnesias regarding its own founding) can be crucial.

Ask any academic about their research and watch their eyes light up! This is one part of the job I especially love - getting to talk about what I do and what it might mean more broadly - outside an academic setting. However this particular project, examining the impact of twenty years of gender equity policies in the film industry, presented some interesting challenges: How to discuss difficult and negative findings - and why it is important to do this. So often researchers are inclined (and encouraged) to focus on the positives. But what if there aren't any? How do we talk about our research then?
LISTEN: #UAlberta's Deb Verhoeven, professor of Womens & Gender Studies, highlights the long road ahead to gender equity in Canada's film industry in this CBC/Radio-Canada interview. https://bit.ly/3yY3ayi
