This week, I had the privilege of representing Spatial Ascent Pty Ltd at the "SIDRA Intersection Training for Project Managers and Reviewers" course, expertly facilitated by Mark Besley and Ian Espada from SIDRA SOLUTIONS. The course aimed to sharpen our abilities to review and interpret SIDRA, a valued tool for effective decision-making in transport design, movement and place integration, and transport planning. The training was comprehensive, covering when and how to use SIDRA, navigating the interface, and working through practical examples. We delved into street level multimodal analysis, calibration, volumes, analysis periods, and performance evaluation for signalised intersections and networks. The highlight was a detailed traffic impact assessment case study. Key insights: - SIDRA’s decade-long application in networked intersections continues to evolve, offering new ways for modellers and planners to optimize transport systems. - The software can aid in assessing options to manage network behaviour for different modes of transport (to match movement and place street purpose): people driving private vehicles, riding buses, walking or cycling. The next course is Introduction to SIDRA between 18 and 21 of June 2024. A dilemma in traffic model calibration Model calibration is important in assessing the ability of your traffic model to replicate existing traffic conditions so as to trust the intersection design solutions you create. This is a discussion of the dilemma that exists when calibrating SIDRA capacity and performance models using observed delay or queue length data for oversaturated lanes. Let’s assume that the survey method collected observed delays that match the definition of delay in the SIDRA model. The volumes were counted at the stop line of a signalised intersection lane which was oversaturated (overflow queues persisted during the survey period). Therefore, the flow rate at the stop line was the capacity value corresponding to a degree of saturation (DOS) of 1.0. SIDRA estimate of DOS was close to 1.0, i.e. the estimated capacity was close to the observed capacity. However, the observed delay was much larger than the SIDRA estimate. Now, let’s look at what happens with model calibration using a simple example. See the attached figure. The stopline flow was 1430 veh/h specified as arrival flow input in SIDRA. SIDRA used a basic saturation flow of 1950 tcu/h and estimated capacity as 1443 veh/h (DOS = 1430/1443 = 0.991). Thus, the capacity estimate was satisfactory but the estimated average delay was 38.2 s whereas the observed delay was 76.0 sec (an error of 50%). The method for capacity calibration of traffic signal lanes is to adjust the basic saturation flow. To apply this to increase the estimated delay, the basic saturation flow was reduced to 1761 tcu/h giving estimated capacity = 1303 veh/h (DOS = 1430/1303 = 1.097) and estimated delay = observed delay =76.0 sec. However, this calibration method resulted in underestimation of capacity and the true demand flow. This could cause problems with the estimation of other performance statistics (see below). This calibration dilemma was resolved by estimating an increased demand flow to match the observed delay rather than decreasing capacity. The demand flow rate = 1590 veh/h was found to give estimated average delay = observed delay =76.0 sec with no change in the estimated capacity (DOS =1590/1443 = 1.102). While the same average delay value (76.0 sec) was found by increasing the demand flow or by decreasing the capacity, the latter resulted in underestimation of such performance statistics as total delay and travel time (veh-h/h), total travel distance (veh-km/h), total CO2 emissions (kg/year) and back of queue (metres) in the range 8 to 10 per cent. This online training program is for professionals who review SIDRA analyses rather than actually undertaking the analyses, as well as project managers who have little experience in detailed modelling but make traffic design, movement and place, and transport planning decisions based on review of SIDRA analyses. It should be of interest to transport planners who wish to increase their familiarity with detailed traffic models, and to experienced SIDRA users who want to review their SIDRA knowledge. This online training will focus on input and output relevant to the review of SIDRA analysis results with a high level of output interpretation. It will provide some familiarity with the SIDRA user interface, and discuss assessment of project findings based on SIDRA results towards making better design and operation decisions. Should we use SCATS MF to calibrate SIDRA Saturation Flow? We have published a new technical report on the use of the SCATS Maximum Flow (MF) parameter to calibrate SIDRA Saturation Flow: https://lnkd.in/gztBKEAr There has been an emerging trend for SIDRA users to calibrate Saturation Flow in modelling existing signalised intersections to match the value of Maximum Flow measured and recorded in the SCATS traffic control system (SCATS MF). While the concept of SCATS MF is similar to Saturation Flow, there are significant differences in how they are measured and applied. The report discusses in detail that valid values of SCATS MF are not available for many lanes, and where they are available, there are serious problems in translating SCATS MF to a reliable Saturation Flow value. Consequently, it recommends that SCATS MF should not be used to calibrate SIDRA models. Instead, standard values of Basic Saturation Flow should be used, and models should be calibrated and validated against observed traffic performance measures. We thank our colleague David Nash for the research he conducted for the findings included in this report. We also published this video on this topic on a presentation by David Nash at the AITPM Online Technical Conference Series November 2022. https://lnkd.in/gdsX2vTs #SidraIntersection #Infrastructure #Transportation #TrafficManagement #RoadSafety #UrbanDevelopment #Australia #SmartCity #PublicTransportation #Sustainability #TrafficEngineering #UrbanPlanning #CityGrowth #TrafficSolutions #Innovation #TransportNetwork #InfrastructureDevelopment #EfficientTransport #CommunityDevelopment #SustainableCities #ModernUrbanization #RoadImprovement #TrafficFlow #Connectivity #MobilitySolutions #GreenInfrastructure #Progress #FutureCity
