Container ships will have to pay 29% of the cost of FuelEU Maritime, while tankers and dry cargo will each have to pay 13% of the cost. The critical situation in the #RedSea is putting a significant amount of pressure on Italian companies. Attacks by the Houthi rebels on cargo ships bound for Suez, followed by airstrikes carried out by the USA and the UK, are causing delays and increases in transport costs. The prices of maritime transport from Asia to Europe and the Mediterranean have almost tripled, while voyages have been extended by approximately 15 days, resulting in higher fuel costs and insurance premiums. This situation has had a detrimental effect on the Italian economy, as ships prefer Northern European ports. So, yet again we find ourselves talking about #reshoring, the process of returning the production and/or manufacturing of goods to the company's original country (backshoring) or to a nearby country (nearshoring). However, even if reshoring entails the need to shorten the supply chain in order to seek suppliers with premises closer to home (which also has a considerable impact on reducing CO2 emissions and thus on the sustainability process itself), full-blown reshoring seems a complex option to be taken into consideration right now also because it might need years to be fully implemented, especially in case of returning of the production. What are your thoughts on this? Let’s discuss this topic in the comments below.

Did you attend this year's Maritime Cyprus? 🚢 Amie Pascoe, Director at BLUE, shares her insight on this year's event. "You will be unsurprised to hear that decarbonisation dominated this year’s Maritime Cyprus conference. It’s an unavoidable, inescapable reality that the industry continues to grapple with. And – also unsurprisingly – it’s a reality that divides opinions. Shipping may be a fragmented market. But at Maritime Cyprus, it seemed that shipowners fell broadly into two camps; there are optimists and there are pessimists." 👉 Read more insights in our latest blog: https://lnkd.in/ecNp5nGJ Watch this space for more Maritime Cyprus insights! #Maritime #Decarbonization #MarCy2023 Shipping Deputy Ministry of Cyprus

Tailwinds for #shortsea shipping! Many thanks Johan-Paul Verschuure for your excellent keynote presentation and panel at Coastlink Conference reflecting on strength and growing importance of the #shortsea shipping. “Short sea is gaining more importance relative to overall trade. Despite broader market challenges, short sea shipping has shown resilience, especially when compared with deepsea.” “In combination with local production (nearshoring), short sea shipping has clear sustainability benefits. With EU ETS regulation, it will be preferred over long-distance trucking because of lower GHG emissions per container. As a result, hinterland will contract and cargo will come from closer to ports. Carbon pricing will change competitive position between ports and terminals. Captive hinterlands will become more entrenched, terminals closer to demand /end markets will gain importance.” Associated British Ports Port of Amsterdam Dorine Bosman Toepfer Transport GmbH Sabine Kilper Samskip Kari-Pekka Laaksonen
