Executives are not happy within CEVA Logistics: the integration with Bolloré Logistics, announced last week with the news of a restructure, is creating headaches for managers concerned over job losses, reported an insider. “The politics has never been worse. When the deal was originally done, there was a ‘secret agreement’ that the Bolloré management/executives would be the ones to keep the top jobs, which of course is not good for the Ceva employees. Although last week brought the usual hodgepodge of one step forward, one step back in logistics news, there is one very big positive. UPS and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters have come to a tentative agreement on a five-year contract. It provides workplace security for existing workers along with better pay, and an allowance for more full-time jobs, leaving both sides feeling they’ve reached a win-win agreement. Shippers everywhere were bracing for the worst, for fear of a strike which thankfully appears to have been averted. #thefreightarchitects #jaguarfreight #logistics

US forwarder cuts 20% of staff amid supply chain chaos According to media reports, Flexport, which was considered one of the fastest growing digital freight forwarders in 2022, is to cut 20% of its staff, equalling as many as 500 employees. This is the third round of layoffs for the company in just over a year, highlighting how logistics companies have been under pressure to squeeze their budget to be able to remain profitable. The news comes as the UN’s trade and development body said that the situation in the Red Sea, geopolitical tensions affecting shipping in the Black Sea ( due to Russia-Ukraine conflict) as well as the impacts of climate change on the Panama Canal, have given rise to a complex and “profound” crisis in global trade. Supply chain and logistics operators continue to face challenges in the recruitment and retention of staff. Figures outlined in a recent report from Descartes Systems Group, conducted with 1000 organisations based across 9 European countries, Canada and the United States, show that 76% of respondents indicated a notable workforce shortage. The IRU the world road transport organisation, has also reported on a current shortage of over 233,000 drivers across Europe, preventing more than half of European truck operators from expanding their business. They estimate that this is expected to rise to 745,000 by 2028, as active drivers continue to retire. It’s also clear that companies are doing everything they can to attract and retain more drivers.” IRU state that over half of operators provide performance rewards and increased salaries to better retain and attract drivers and the data from Descartes highlights that 54% of supply chain and logistics operators are now prioritising automation of tasks with advances in technology, in order to improve productivity, as well as to attract new workers, in the face of such large shortages. The recent UAW agreement with the Big Three automakers has sent shockwaves through the industry. Didi Caldwell outlines three key reasons why the deal spells trouble for Southern manufacturers: 1️⃣ Organizing attempts can be costly and disruptive, impacting both productivity and morale. Companies are spending millions to fend off unions, diverting resources and energy from core operations. 2️⃣ Non-union manufacturers are scrambling to raise wages to avoid becoming UAW targets, impacting profit margins and future investments. 3️⃣ Rising costs could drive production overseas, threatening the US automotive sector's competitiveness and market share.
