Honey, this is not what it looks like…
In order to be clear, let me tell you that these racons in a truck (see pictures below) that look like MatoN are not MatoN devices. These pictures are part of the last tests to which our racons are subjected before being shipped to our customers. In this opportunity, racons that will be delivered to Ireland.
According to IALA definition, a MAtoN is defined as a non-fixed or un-moored Aid to Navigation (AtoN); it does not include a fixed or moored buoy that is adrift from station, temporarily or otherwise.
A racon is a transponder beacon designed to give an indication on the radar screen of both bearing and distance, its characteristic paint usually beginning at and extending outward from a point a few hundred yards beyond the echo of the object (as a morse code sign) on which it is mounted that facilitates the recognition of a geographical point, as could be a navigational channel.
While I was commander of a patrol boat in the extreme south of Chile, a complex area with more than 1,095 nautical miles of channels, straits, narrows, narrows and fjords and sudden changes in wind and sea conditions, I used to love racons because they helped us to detect, recognize and identify different dangers and geographical points doing safer navigation in these waters.
So, next time you are strolling in Houston, and you see a truck with a radar antenna at the top, I can bet that will be Andrew and Leland Denson carrying out last quality control actions before shipping our racons to face the toughest operating conditions in the world's shipping lanes.
Thank you Andrew and Leland for the trip, I feel proud to be part of a team with professionals like you.
If you want to know more about our racons or any other Orga BV or Tideland Signal product, just contact us, will be a pleasure to help you to improve safety at sea with our high-quality devices.
