The smaller the number, the brighter the star appears to us. A star of magnitude 0 is 2.512 times brighter than a star of magnitude 1. A star of magnitude -1 is 2.512 times brighter than a star of magnitude 0, and so on. The brightest star in the night sky, Sirius, has a magnitude of -1.46, while the dimmest star visible to the naked eye in pitch-black condition has a magnitude of 6.5.
