Wisconsin, achieves a significant milestone as a Phase 2 recipient of the @U.S. Department of Commerce’s U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) Regional Technology and Innovations Hub (Tech Hub) program, affirming Wisconsin’s leadership in #biohealth #technology and #personalizedmedicine. Following a rigorous selection process, the EDA has awarded the Wisconsin Biohealth Tech Hub with $49 million in federal grants to support transformative projects aligned with the program’s overarching goal. Alongside this, an additional $7.5 million in state funding and $24 million in #industry commitments have been secured, bringing the total funding and commitments to over $80 million. 🏆 Big Win for Wisconsin’s Biohealth Field! 🏆 We are ecstatic to announce that Wisconsin has been named one of 12 regional tech hubs in a nationwide competition, securing $49 million in federal funding to advance biohealth manufacturing, medical research, and job growth in the Milwaukee-Madison region. Our ambitious goal: Create up to 30,000 jobs and drive $9 billion in economic growth over the next decade. With support from the state of Wisconsin, industry partners like GE HealthCare, and local leaders, this funding will expand our region's biohealth capabilities and solidify our position as a global leader in the industry. 🧬 This week's Austin Bio Health Roundup highlights significant data trends, my stance on covering funding announcements, new partnerships, and action across the Texas Bio Triangle. 🧬 💰 Funding: The Way I Plan to Cover Funding Announcements You may have seen reports of a local Bio & Health startup’s funding round through an SEC report filing. While some outlets have covered this, my position is not to. I prefer to support our builders directly rather than trolling the filings for scoops. There is plenty of real investigative journalism that our city would be well served by if that is where they focused. Remember I am not a journalist and I am not the media. When the company is ready to announce their round officially, I’ll gladly shout it to the rooftops. 📊 Data Peter Walker at Carta reports that in 2017, Biopharma and Medical Devices captured just under 10% of all VC dollars. By 2023, this figure rose to 17.7%, and in Q1 2024, it reached 24%. The overarching tailwinds favor our sector and region with trends towards Bio & Health and the physical & digital intersection. Energy and hardware, two other sector blossoming in Central Texas, also saw similar share gains. 🤝 M&A and Partnerships Sensi.AI, a 24/7 senior care intelligence agent, is partnering with Caring Senior Service to deploy SensiAI’s platform in Caring’s 50 locations across the US. The topic was: Promoting institutionally misaligned innovations: the case of open-label placebos. 💊 👨⚕️ The #adoption of new technologies often faces a significant challenge: the reluctance of experts to embrace #innovations even when they are known to be technically efficient. An interesting approach to understanding this issue revolves around evaluating the #legitimacy of innovations within established social norms. We explore this perspective using the example of open-label placebo adoption. Open-label #placebos entail the use of inert substances, openly disclosed, to trigger a placebo effect. Additionally, Wisconsin is receiving a $350,000 planning grant to execute its Biohealth Tech Hub strategy.
