2023 was another busy year for Booking.com Legal & Public Affairs team (fondly referred internally as "LPA" or, jokingly, Legendary Party Animals). I am proud of what the team has accomplished in 2023. We continue to have a unique and strategic position as a team to make a significant impact in the travel and tech industry at a very important historical moment. And, for sure, we will remain challenged as a team as we move into 2024. This gives me a lot of energy as I am back from holidays in Brazil. The welcoming of the new year is exciting, but it will also come with its own personal struggles. Time is a choice and we choose how we spend it (or not!). 𝐈 𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮. My top tip to help plan for a remarkable 2024 is to stay consistent and keep going, being patient when results do not come as fast as one would like or hope. Patience has a terrible reputation in many corporate circles - it's disturbingly passive. But there is nothing passive from the effort it takes to resist the urge to hurry and action(*). Great results come by increments. 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 - from afar - that 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 (including the execution of individual development plans!) 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐛𝐮𝐭, 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭, 𝐢𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬𝐧’𝐭 work that way. Culture is a term that gets casually tossed around when it comes to identifying a business or organization’s strength, but the bottom line is a strong culture is a necessity when there is turbulence. Consider the travel industry where a worldwide pandemic paralyzed operations -- forcing layoffs, furloughs and a considerable re-tooling of operations. As Acendas Travel began its rebound, the focus was on rebuilding a team and integrating existing associates with new ones. Survey feedback indicates Acendas Travel’s strong culture and emphasis on protecting it was crucial in building back business to greater than pre-pandemic levels. One such tactic to support the culture was to record “Get to Know Me” conversations with every staff member and post them on the company intranet. It was a positive means to have the incumbent staff meet and get to know the new team members, and vice versa. Some 18 months after the process started, 84 videos have been recorded and posted. I’m taking care of the partner program team and our ecosystem of agency partners, consultants and technology partners (ISV). My main task is to connect with new and existing partners, assure that they have the information they need to work with Actindo Core1 and deliver excellent projects to our merchants. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐧'𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞? As the daily way to work is limited (just some meters from the living room to the home office), I decided to invest in a height-adjustable desk and to change positions at least twice a day - at least some physical movement. For better video quality, I’m happy about an additional camera light. I think it's just nice if people can see one's face and expressions clearly, even when it gets dark outside early. Other than that, my working style from home is not too different from an office situation. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞, 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐨 𝐮𝐧𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐚 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐚𝐲? Unlike most of the others, I go to sports in the morning before I turn on the computer. It feels better knowing that I wouldn’t have time constraints in the evening. Time boxing during the day is also good to limit the time working as time flies, especially in a remote world. When the computer is shut down, my evenings usually start with a nicely prepared dinner and some background music just like in a hotel or a nice lounge area.
