With the holiday season upon us, it's the perfect time for aspiring educators to step into higher ed teaching roles! Between Thanksgiving and New Year's, class sections are often added, other adjunct professors who have a full-time job outside academia have last-minute schedule changes and can't teach, and other last-minute schedule changes are VERY common. Here’s how: 1️⃣ Check college/university job boards regularly. 2️⃣ Update your CV & be ready to apply quickly. (2 page resumes are usually OK for non-tenure track positions.) 3️⃣ Reach out to department heads at schools you're interested in. Find them on Linkedin and start a conversation. 4️⃣ Network with faculty for insider info on openings. Good luck!

I'm going to let you in on a little secret... It can be really hard to let go of the emotional work, investment, and perceived value of your teaching credentials. However, likely, they are irrelevant in your career change. Teaching credentials are usually the first thing I get rid of when I rewrite teacher resumes and here's why ⬇️ 📌 People who do not have experience working in education likely do not know what they mean or value they hold. 📌 If your credential is not relevant to your next job, it does not belong on your resume. 📌 Likely there are better ways of sharing/explaining your knowledge and experience without listing a teaching credential.

It is the time of year when school administrators start interviewing candidates to fill open teaching positions. As the administrator of a classical Christian school I would love to find candidates who were trained classically or had experience teaching classically. Those in my position know that that is not an easy proposition. In February 2023 I was able to participate in a zoom call with Dr. Christopher Perrin and we asked him how we should approach hiring given this limitation. I loved his answer, he said to look to hire people who are "classically minded." What does that mean? I'll summarize some of his criteria for being classically minded. A classically minded teacher is one who: 1. Loves what is true, good, and beautiful 2. Has a holy curiosity 3. Loves to read source material, not commentaries 4. Is not utilitarian 5. Wants to know where things and words come from 6. Is a perpetual student 7. Loves illuminating minds 8. Wants to teach and be taught Do you have any other criteria to identify someone who is classically minded?

Someone just showed me an email from their School Administrators (not all are bad, many are great) telling them something that's disturbing to me... "Use all the block time, there should be no free time" I am sorry but this is why every #teacher is becoming a #transitioningteacher and they are quitting, and why I quit in the first place. I am sorry; but if you HIRE me to do a JOB then you should let ME do the JOB, and I bet if I asked EVERY teacher to leave a reaction if they have ever been undermined like this, I would have a 100% reaction rate. The only thing that has stayed unchanged longer than old, mean, and honestly toxic people in education is the toilets( 1592 and unchanged since) and sharks lol. EDUCATION and BEING BUSY are not the same things. Good teachers (and by extension good #InstructionalDesigners, #CurriculumDevelopers, #LearningAndDevelopment people) understand LESS is MORE. Giving time to REFLECT, giving time to DISCOVER, baking in time for MISTAKES to happen; THAT is education. Telling me to hit a time quota is you telling me you are focusing on the wrong things and to a teacher you sound like an idiot or you sound like someone who does not have my back. Public Education as a whole needs to support teachers more and if I had a child in a class where the teacher got disrespected like that I would be first in line to defend them.
