Call for evidence on pension fund clearing exemption HM Treasury has opened a consultation seeking input from industry stakeholders on pension funds’ exemption from the clearing obligation, to inform the government’s long-term approach. In the UK, pension funds are currently exempt from the obligation to clear certain derivative contracts. Earlier this year the government extended this exemption to 18 June 2025 and noted that it would conduct a review to determine a long-term approach. The S&P500 index itself soared this year and posted a 24% return. This is good news for all those public pension funds with 12/31 measurement dates (which includes the four Chicago pension funds). Statutorily required contributions for 2025 for these Chicago pension funds have a chance at being lower than the $2.8b required for 2024.
