Research shows the troubling links between #socialmedia and mental health, ranging from distress and depression to disordered eating and self harm for teens — 24.4% are considered to be social media addicts. Not to mention, owning a smartphone younger predicts lower self-worth, motivation and resilience, and more sadness, anxiety and aggression - especially affecting girls. It is critical that we empower and protect the young women in our lives, the next generation of leaders! We must continue to work towards a world where we can foster safe spaces online. It’s not just up to parents and caregivers, it’s up to all of us to play a central role role for young women and girls when it comes to online #safety. Thank you, Emily Mossburg, for being a steadfast champion of online safety. Deloitte

It's sad how much social media affects teens today. We definitely need to look out for the younger crowd and make sure they're using these platforms in a way that's good for their mental health. How about apps start including features that remind users to take breaks or show more real-life content instead of just the highlight reels? I think it’s something developers and all of us in the tech space need to think about more.

This is a very important issue, and it's not only concerns the young generation, but women of all ages. I'd like to know what the statistics are for more mature women like myself. I have had so many issues in the past 5 years I had to get off. The issues with bots, fake profiles, and scammers are an epidemic.

the stats are alarming. It's crucial to prioritize online safety for young women and girls. Creating supportive digital environments is a collective responsibility that requires ongoing vigilance and action from everyone in society.

My name is Samuel Fox and I am the founder of Refugee Sports Network, a media platform serving refugee communities worldwide. We have a program called Sportzbudz where we connect young people living refugee camps to young people living in other places around the world. While we have no scientific research to back up the theory, we believe that such connections (which we used to call penpals) can really enhance a girl’s self-esteem and feelings of self-worth. If you are interested in knowing more about our program, please reach out and we can even run a pilot program where we can introduce you to some girls living in refugee camps starting in Kenya and perhaps you can match them up. If you will, please watch this interview of a young woman in Kakuma Refugee Camp. She is absolutely wonderful, bright and articulate, a perfect candidate for our program. https://youtu.be/OyaNDJJgLnc?si=QnZtjduHB9tPx1fS Thank you.

I'm hoping that the generation coming up now will make a collective decision to step away from social media. I see how addictive and harmful it is, but the social pressure to communicate through those apps makes it very difficult to disengage. As parents, we can set limits and have conversations, but I foresee a generational shift that will need to occur for larger change.

Shelley Zalis this is such an important subject, I have a 14 year granddaughter and her world is so different to the time I was 14! Her confidence and clearsight amazes me. 🙏🏻 Parental loving guidance and responsible media has to be carefully handled. Bravo to Emily Mossburg as champion. Thank you.

Thank you for speaking to this! We just went to our school board yesterday to begin the conversation of how to make our schools a cell phone & smartwatch-free zone during the school day. In alignment with ALL of the data out there, the stories from children, teachers, and parents alike continues to make us say...surely we can do better!
