Congratulations, Banneker, my Banneker. Young Rhonda would have this to say about Banneker: 😩 Why is my bookbag so heavy? 😩 Typing class at 7:30am? Really? 😩 AP History at 7:45a then AGAIN during the school day? 😳 200 volunteer hours??? 😫 A 25 page senior thesis? Adult Rhonda would say: 🙏🏽Thank God for digital. :) 🙏🏽Thank GOD (and Ms. Tynes) that I can type. ✊🏽AP History taught me to think critically and understand how Black and Brown people shaped democracy. 🥰 Volunteer hours at the Children's Defense Fund taught me to the beginnings of organizing, advocacy, and political awareness. 😁 construct and argument? College senior thesis? Memo to senior leadership? Say less. #dcps #school #educator #equity Harvard Graduate School of Education
Congratulations to Benjamin Banneker Academic High School on being named a National Blue Ribbon School for 2023! 👏 The Blue Ribbon award exemplifies the hard work of the students, parents, educators, administrators, and partners happening all year long, and Banneker's commitment to academic rigor and developing the whole student. 📚 We're proud to support Banneker and Principal Berger with the help of the Banneker Bound Foundation! #DCPS #BlueRibbon

How is it that Collegiate Recovery Programs and Communities are thriving at HBCUs with Black & Brown students in recovery and Black and Brown allies but our PWI communities are still homogeneously white males with only few exceptions? While I know the answer to the question, I don’t yet have a solution.

Senior Visiting Faculty @ Duke Distinguished Professor of Economics (incoming) @UNC-FSU | Health | Labor & Immigration Economics
I have a professional update to celebrate (and others to come!). I have been selected the 2024 Educator of the Year by the Minnesota State Board of Trustees. This is the highest honor award for excellence in teaching in the entire Minnesota State system. Only 4 are selected out of dozens of applications. I am grateful to have several mentors and inspiring students in my professional journey who motivated me to pursue better and more innovative ways to delivery my teaching and to connect students to more relatable experiences and real world examples with maintaining high academic rigor. Some of my innovations include mixing a traditional course on Labor Economics with a study abroad component, jigsaw activities to discussed peer-reviewed articles, simulations of immigration process experiences, Pre and Post Debates, self introductions in online courses with sharing gratitude and savoring experiences, and incorporating students to real data to analyze local issues. Further, my activities also include direct discussions on equity, disparities, implicit bias, and examples that demystify the economics profession. #IlookLikeAnEconomist
Four SCSU employees were recently honored in the annual Minnesota State Board of Trustees Awards for Excellence. Congrats to Monica Garcia-Perez (Educators of the Year), Dale Buske (Outstanding Educators), John Mirth (Outstanding Educators) and Christine Lepkowski (Outstanding Service Faculty) for their work! https://scsu.mn/3UUvzyd

With 5 days to go until the Big Give Christmas Challenge, we’re shining a spotlight on the transformative potential of a secondary education. Today, we’re showing how secondary schools can foster #ambition, and empower adolescents to lead #fulfilling and #sociallyresponsible lives. PEAS believes that secondary schools have a unique role to play in equipping youth with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to choose a future pathway that’s right for them; whether that’s entering the labour market, participating in democracy or starting a family. With the right support, all students can become agents of change in their lives, their communities and beyond. We integrate #lifeskills development in all aspects of school life, and not just through the life skills curriculum, to ensure our students are well equipped for life after they leave school. All PEAS schools offer #careerguidance, and some invite #rolemodels from the community to inspire our students and foster new and achievable ambitions. Evidence shows that PEAS alumni are more likely to be satisfied with their life, be employed or pursuing further studies than alumni from other schools. Curious to hear from our accomplished alumni? Watch this video to discover some of the inspirational journeys they’ve embarked on since leaving school. https://lnkd.in/eG5_BCYp #reimaginginsecondary

TSL is a very impactful program to retain effective diverse teachers in high need schools. I reviewed the program in person in DC when it was then known as TIF and have so after now under TSL. Great to see the impact of TSL. It comes down to the powerful mechanicals to retain talent: pay as incentive and professional development- decades of research to show that it works. It seems even more urgent given teacher recruitment and retention needs of schools districts as they seek evidence-based grant interventions such as TSL.
Today, ED is announcing nearly $115 million to support 29 Teacher and School Leader (TSL) Incentive projects, bolstering ED’s commitment to a well-prepared, diverse, & sustainable educator workforce. https://lnkd.in/gy9_Yrju

Check out this wonderful article written by Zvi Gutierrez! I had an incredible opportunity to apply for an English Teaching Assistant (ETA) position in Cambodia with The Fulbright Program, and I am honored to have been chosen as an Alternate. While I wasn't selected as a Finalist, the application taught me about myself and how we can promote cross-cultural connections. Give this article a read if you want to know more!
