According to the U.S. State Dept., many Indonesian women and girls are vulnerable to trafficking for sexual and labor exploitation. Indonesian children in high-risk communities rarely grow up with positive adult influence. Many children are raised by older siblings or other family members. This lack of education and supervision often leads to abuse, exploitation, and trafficking. She lives in a small village in Indonesia. She has no way to reach her parents and is in the care of her abusive uncle. He began selling her at the age of 8 years old. She was then moved to an orphanage where the abuse continued. Thankfully, she was rescued and brought to a She Is Safe home where she is supported, educated, and loved. She is safe. www.SheIsSafe.org

Today is World Humanitarian Day where we honor those who daily put themselves on the frontlines for the sake of others. What is a humanitarian? Webster’s dictionary defines a humanitarian as “a person devoted to or working for the health and happiness of other people.” Why do we celebrate this day? In the work She Is Safe does to free and equip women and girls, we have 332 coworkers, our “boots on the ground” in the countries we serve. They are there each and every day, working for the safety, freedom and future of women and girls in high risk communities.
