Be intentional in your BLACKNESS... "One of the reasons I founded Dîner en Noir (#DEN) in 2016, was the lack of diversity at the "dinner in white" event. When doing press, I would always shy away from the race discussion saying #DEN means black attire, not Black people, because I didn't want to alienate our White members who also financially supported the organization. Several years later, I had a meeting with a major Black media outlet regarding a potential national media partnership deal which ultimately fell through because of my trepidation of the perception that #DEN was a Black-forward organization, even though we were intentional in our marketing. In 2021, after years of hosting #DEN Events and fundraising for non-profit organizations around the world, I noticed a blatant inequity in the funding of arts programming, small business/entrepreneurship opportunities, and health/wellness education in Black communities. I knew without a doubt that not only must we promote #DEN as a Black-forward organization and for the culture but, we also needed to be intentional with our support and funding in our support of our Black community and in the non-profit organizations/programs that support the Black community. To Whom It May Concern :@ Florida Panthers First and foremost, I want to thank your organization once again for the donation just before the pandemic hit which really did some good for a lot of our clients. At the time, they were surprised that the Panthers, an ice hockey organization, would seek to help an underprivileged part of the black community, as we can plainly see that black people have very little representation in the sport. However, we surveyed our clients to find out what they thought. I'm going to be honest more honest than I have ever been with a donor before. Black people in general are concerned about the image of a black player checking a white player with the force that is used today. Could white fans on either side stand for a black player checking a white player on either team? Secondly, as with fans of Spain and many other countries that have black players, taunting them with racial slurs could the Panthers deal with that situation without alienating their base, which is mainly white. Will the Panthers alienate their current fan base while trying to bring in black players. What I'm telling you is usually ignored, and we pretend these things don't exist. I would not take the position you are offering because I am the CEO of Fort Lauderdale Community Center. But I have some ideas about how to fix this situation that has alienated black players, and because of that, black fans are not spending their money in your arena. The testatone needed to play hockey and be the best; it exists in the black community, but in the past it would get you killed! I do think this position is a great start, and DEI is very important. However, today the term is used to minimize black participants in favor of what comes under the blanket category of people of color. Anti-Racism Campaigns: is another way of starting to change the mindset? Your marketer needs to understand and strike a balance that does not offend your current base. Good luck! Spot on reading for those of us who have found ourselves in the nonprofit industrial complex. Anyone have other recommended readings? "However, we need to admit that boards in general are seriously problematic. I have a Rule of One-Thirds when it comes to boards: 1/3 of them are helpful, 1/3 are useless, and 1/3 are actually harmful. This means that 2/3 of nonprofit boards are useless or harmful. For every good-board story, there are countless tales of crappy boards. Those who micromanage the staff. Those who get buried in operations, wasting their time scrutinizing font selections and toilet paper purchases. Those who prevent progress, like the boards who refuse to allow their organizations to publicly support Black Lives Matter, thinking it’s too “political.” Even among the boards I’ve worked with, I’ve dealt with my fair share of crappiness, like the time my board blocked a paid family leave policy that the staff all supported and the entire sector is moving toward." https://lnkd.in/gUKM2psD

📣 Today National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy released "Cracks in the Foundation: Philanthropy’s Role in Reparations for Black People in the DMV". This comprehensive and powerful body of work was led by my coworker Katherine Ponce, MBA, MS alongside countless others who have stewarded this work for over two years. I encourage you to read it!📣 Institutional philanthropy's systemic underfunding of Black communities and Black-led institutions has been called out by activists and advocates in the movement for racial justice for decades. Folks in the movement for reparations have also long highlighted that increased funding to racial justice work, while critical, is not the same as reckoning with the harms caused to specific Black people and communities by the founders of philanthropic institutions as they generated their philanthropic capital. "Cracks in the Foundation" compiles, contextualizes and publishes the historical connections between philanthropic wealth origins, past harms, and modern-day racial disparities to provide an invitation and a roadmap for philanthropy to exercise responsibility for past harms by finding ways to repair, heal, and restore local communities harmed by the actions and decisions that created charitable wealth.  #DCReparations #ReparationsMatter #DMVHistory  #ResponsivePhilanthropy #RacialJustice
