Green infrastructure (GI) often conjures images of parks and green roofs, but what about the vibrant urban spaces of community gardens and urban farms? This research paper sheds light on the multifaceted value these unconventional forms of GI contribute to our cities. Community gardens and urban farms can do more than manage stormwater; they are hubs of productivity, culture, and ecology. Urban agroforestry systems, or ‘food forests,’ amplify these advantages, offering many benefits outlined in permaculture theory: food, fuel, fiber, medicine, and beauty. I’ve eagerly watched the niche of agroforestry and food forests evolve, anticipating its integration into landscape architecture. This leads to a question that keeps coming up for me: how can landscape architects, effectively communicate the value we add to alternative GI projects like agroforestry and forest gardening? 🌎 Ref: https://lnkd.in/gwjG9b_t #landscapearchitecture #landscape #agroforestry #urbanagroforestry #urbanfarm #greeninfrastructure #permaculture #foodforests #GI #urbangardening

CAR PARKS, TREES, AND LANDSCAPING This car park in the East Midlands, UK, was completed in 2020. Is there a Biodiversity Net Gain? Would this get approval now with the new BNG legislation - out next month? Is this what the British Landscape Architect Alan Simpson described 20 years ago as "Cynical Tokenism"? #bng #carparks #architecture #urbanforestry #trees #treeplanting #arboriculture #climatechange #urbanheatisland #landscaping #landscapearchitecture #greeninfrastructure

Comparative trials are such a powerful way to demonstrate the benefits structural soil cells deliver over Business as Usual tree planting methods in urban areas - the sooner structural soil cells BECOME BAU, the sooner cities will see actual positive strides towards achieving canopy targets and Net Zero…remember, trees will be TWICE as big in HALF the time, with ZERO pavement damage!
Structural soil v.s. Stratavault soil cells 10 year time lapse compares the tree canopy growth of these 2 planting methods: ➡️2 trees ➡️same species, ➡️same original size ➡️planted at the same time ➡️in the same street The trees on the left are planted in structural soil. The trees on the right are planted using Citygreen International Stratavault . Stratavault grows 3 x the tree canopy structural soil can, in the same amount of time. 🤯 If you're still using structural soil as part of your urban forest strategy to achieve tree canopy targets, your planting methods won't get you there any time soon. If you'd like to learn more about the #climatechange benefits Stratavault can deliver for your urban greening strategy, book a meeting https://lnkd.in/gzR8eqPg #urbandesign #urbanplanning #urbaninnovation #townplanning #urbanforestry #greenspace #landscapedesign #landscaping #sustainablearchitecture #sustainablecities #greentech #resilience #preparedness

I've spent most of the last decade working for organisations that have little to no regard for the environment. It's such a joy to be working for Citygreen International, delivering life-sustaining, climate positive solutions to the world. Innovations such as their Stratavault urban tree solution not only allow trees to be retrofitted into dense urban spaces, but almost like magic, they encourage flourishing tree growth not achievable using BAU methods. #Localgov - this 10 year time lapse, courtesy of Sunshine Coast Council highlights the power of Stratavault as an urban tree planting solution that standard tree planting methods used by many local municipalities simply cannot compete with. #urbangreening #climatechange #trees #greeninfrastructure #timeforchange #stratavault #sustainabledevelopment #sustainability #urbanisation #greentech #sustainablecities #landscapedesign #landscaping #sustainablearchitecture More on the timelapse case study here https://rb.gy/3iiuik

Last Friday, BSC's Ricardo Austrich and Casey-Lee Bastien, along with Stella Lensing (Trails & Greenways Planner, Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation) and James Hearsum (President, Massachusetts Horticultural Society), presented “Urban Landscapes Why Horticulture Matters; Towards a more cosmopolitan plant palette” at BSLA/Boston Society of Landscape Architects's Fieldday. Among the issues discussed: 🍃 Urban horticulture that meets the needs of diverse constituencies justly. 🍃 The role of horticulture in addressing urban heat islands, stormwater management, and pollinator habitat as ecological services is to create sustainable landscaping that is not strictly native but adapted to thrive in neglected urban environments. 🍃 The increasing concern over the degradation of our ecosystem has led to in a desire to enhance native species ecosystems among the general public & regulators however, it routinely disfavors a broader more “cosmopolitan” planting palette that better serves the needs of the environment. #urbanlandscape #horticulture #landscapearchitects #landscapearchitecture #ecosystem #plantpalette #fieldday #bsla #sustainability #buildsupportconnect

It's time to introduce some individual species of trees and talk about the biodiversity benefits they can bring to different landscapes if planted and cared for correctly. We will introduce some less common species later, but let's start with some that you are likely to bump into and will be confident identifying once you know the leaf pattern! First up, the native field maple, Acer campestre. The five-lobed leaf and winged seeds (tinged pink when mature) make this tree easy to spot in any season. It has been shown to have moderate tolerance to pollution and salt; which is why it is sometimes recommended for use in transport corridors. Its dense canopy supports a range of caterpillars, aphids, ladybirds, hoverflies, bees and birds. According to The Woodland Trust's longstanding historical record, Nature's Calender, the buds of this tree are just starting to burst - so keep your eye out for it in the coming months! If you’re an Arborist, Landscape Architect, Designer, Developer, or anyone else who plants trees, you understand first-hand just how important tree stabilization is, especially when a tree dies and needs to be replaced. By properly planting your new tree and using Tree Staple, Inc.'s root ball stabilizers, you're providing the needed protection against heavy winds that have the potential to topple your newly planted tree, causing unwanted additional stress that can open the door for your tree to succumb to the adverse conditions. Incorporating Tree Staple's root ball stabilizers, is a proactive measure that contributes to the long-term health of your trees. By providing stability during the critical early years, you’re investing in the resilience and vitality of the tree, ensuring it thrives and enhances the beauty of your landscape for years to come. That’s true sustainability. 🌲 #TreeStaple #arboriculture #treemanagement #treeanchoring #landscapedevelopment #landscaping #treeplanting #urbanforestry #treesupport #treecare #sustainability

BS5837 consultation closes tomorrow (16th October)! If you work in arboriculture or related industries and have not yet commented on the document, please do so. It is vitally important that the industry feeds into the next iteration of this British Standard. If you wanted to see our initial review of the document take a look on our website (links in post below). #consultation #britishstandard #BS5837 #arboriculture #trees #development #design #deadline
The British Standard 5837 is what all arboriculturists will consider when working on development projects. Most in the industry feel that not only is the current issue outdated, but there are significant shortcomings too. The draft standard was published in August, and we wanted to provide a complete review of the document for our #arboriculturist colleagues and clients. You can see our review of the draft https://lnkd.in/e7MGRvjf The deadline for comment closes on the 16th of October - if you're an arboriculturist, please review and provide comments on the document. https://lnkd.in/eHycwzYV #BritishStandard #arboriculture #development #architects #trees #TreeFrontiers
