Good Governance perspectives for high potential developing nation Suriname. Recenty Reuters and other media mentioned Suriname’s large oil-revenue potential. The country has however struggled with “Good Governance, corruption and AML/KYC challenges” for most of its existence as an independent state since 1975. Foreign investors beware: SDG 16 requires anti-corruption measures Despite being a resource-rich nation with oil, timber, bauxite, gold, diamond, uranium and many other minerals, over 47 years of exporting has brought the population little economic wellbeing. Braindrain and elder pensionados that have to struggle to make ends meet have remained core characteristics. Perspective: What will make the needle of progress move for Suriname? How it will be made sure that oil-revenues are well spent benefitting the population, given the factual historical track record of ongoing political instability, corruption and ruling party changes over the past 47 years remains unclear. So in the interest of the citizens and external investors, concrete safeguards are needed for starters such as: (a) Transparent public constructive evaluation (b) Quarterly public press conferences by the “Rekenkamer” / Comptroller and CLAD Audit General institute should be implemented as hard requirements. (c) As well as evidenced proscecution and punishment for corrupt government and business professionals. All of the above remains largely absent after 47 years of citizens suffering with no current end game in sight that solves these matters. Opportunity The most important opportunity for the people of Suriname for “Good governance” also in the spirit of the UN’s sustainability goals, will thus come from political renewal through new entrants with high ethical standards, at the country leadership level. That is were true opportunities need to be seized by citizens and stakeholders to infuse bold new entrants in the political and governance space of Suriname, in order to make the needle of progress move in the right direction.

Annette Mosman, CEO van APG en zakenvrouw van het jaar deed een mooie markante uitspraak die mij uit het hart gegrepen is omdat het gaat over verhaalcultuur en conditioneringspatronen die we samen in stand hielden, maar nu ook kunnen veranderen. Annete Mosman: “Dan moeten we om te beginnen onze jongens anders gaan opvoeden. Want dat willen scoren zie je niet alleen bij ceo’s; dat zie ik ook elke week op het sportveld. In onze maatschappij worden jongens gestimuleerd om te winnen. Misschien is dat wel een mooie link naar de rol die vrouwen kunnen vervullen.” Een duidelijke stellingname. Maar leren we nu juist niet aan veel meisjes om in de winnen-mannencultuur te gaan strijden voor een plaats? Is dat wel wat we moeten willen? Zou de mannencultuur zoveel maatgevende en goedkeurende invloed moeten hebben? Want wat is winnen nou eigenlijk? Veel winnen is nu gewoon verliezen of een incoherent ander iets, vaak niet bijster duurzaam voor onze mensen, onze planeet, noch erg duidelijk of meetbaar en prettig bijdragend aan werkelijk geluk en de tevredenheid van mensen m.i. #sustainability #sustainablefinance #banking #diversityandinclusion
