👉 On June 13th, we participated in the ROSETTA Project EU consortium meeting held at #Teagasc in Dublin. The #ROSETTAproject aims to reduce and prevent food waste by improving market access for suboptimal foods, which do not meet marketing standards but are still safe to eat. As WP leaders for analyzing the business potential of suboptimal foods and task leaders for co-defining food waste reduction solutions, Konstantina Kakkavou from our team presented project updates and plans for our next steps. Insights from the Europe North to South: food system challenges and solutions event in Brussels! 🌍 Hosted by the European Environmental Bureau, the event underscored the urgent need for a holistic approach to transform our food system into one that is environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable. Here are some key takeaways: 🌱 Tomaso Ferrando from the University of Antwerp stressed the importance of a systemic and just transition in food governance, echoing Amartya Sen's words "there is no such thing as an apolitical food problem." 🍅 Ecologistas en Acción shed light on the hidden costs of export-oriented agribusinesses in Spain, emphasizing the negative impact on local ecosystems and workers' rights. 🚜 Juchowo Farm showcased a successful model of revitalizing land through sustainable agricultural practices, demonstrating the potential for positive change. 🍽 Public procurement and meal systems emerged as powerful drivers for sustainable food choices, highlighting the role of public-private partnerships in fostering behavioral change. The event underscored promising initiatives and serious challenges in the European food system, emphasizing the need for diverse solutions and constructive dialogue. 💡 Mutual learning: Strengthening innovation knowledge on food systems among European crossborder projects The numbers speak for themselves: ☝ 2.4 billion people do not have regular access to enough food ☝ Over a third of global greenhouse gas emissions arise in food systems ☝ More than a third of all food is wasted or lost Global food systems therefore urgently need to be carefully examined and adapted. The two Interreg-projects Food4CE and FOODIS Interreg Italia - Österreich 2021-2027 deal with exactly this topic, each with a different focus but an overarching goal: make food systems more innovative and sustainable. For this purpose, a first exchange took place this week between the two project partners, ECONSULT Betriebsberatungsges.m.b.H. and LCA Logistik Center Austria Süd GmbH. The aim of the cooperation across projects is to explore whether and what overlaps there are in the subject areas being examined or still to be analyzed and how we can learn from each other. 🌍Our world's #FoodSystems are currently facing a multitude of challenges, and the imperative shift towards more #SustainableModels is the goal we all striving for. 🎙Today, we are thrilled to share some positive insights from ENoLL (European Network of Living Labs) Project Manager Dolinda Cavallo participation as a speaker at European Food Information Council (EUFIC) online event "Mobilising Citizens for Change: Joining Forces for Sustainable Food Systems." She shed light on the latest findings from the ALL-Ready project and highlighted the pivotal role of #LivingLabs in shaping #SustainableStrategies for #AgroEcology transition and #SoilHealth. 👩🌾During the session, we explored pressing challenges confronting global food systems, presenting successful #EU-funded initiatives in which citizens and food stakeholders collaborate to drive the transformation of #FoodSystems. Today is the International Day of Awareness of #FoodLoss and #FoodWaste! Calculating the impact of #FoodLoss in the primary sector is not easy, due to the lack of real appropriate methodologies to do it. In a time when most European public administrations are working on new policies to mitigate these phenomena, it is essential to propose and consolidate new methods of calculating the #environmental, #social and #economic impact of food losses. The FOLOU project will contribute to make #Catalonia a reference territory in this sense. This international project is coordinated by the BETA Technological Center, and at catalan level also counts with the participation of Espigoladors, the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Agència de Residus de Catalunya.
